Integrated design environment for simulation and numerical analysis of production processes

Obiettivo

- Integration platform for FEM simulation, CAD, and manufacturing simulation in welding fabrication (heavy construction equipment, steel constructions, aluminium constructions, transport & shipbuilding;
- assembly procedure planning;
- networking platform for collaborative welding engineering.
Objectives and content:

European material processing industry is today facing a hard competition on the internal as well as on the world market. Major determining factors for competition are time-to-market, quality and production cost. Production cost is mainly influenced by labour and time intensive process follow-up treatment, necessary due to internal stresses and resulting in geometrical distortions after thermal processing of metallic work pieces. The prediction of internal stresses produced by thermal treatment like cutting and welding already during the design phase of a new product would enormously reduce follow-up treatment and prototyping work, increase product quality over lifetime and save resources like material, energy and labour, finally leading to a tremendous reduction in time-to-market and manufacturing cost. Especially looking towards new high-performance welding processes like T.I.M.E double-wire and rotating arc welding in combination with laser cutting, and towards ûnewú materials like Aluminium, duplex steels and high tensile steels, the advantages of these innovations cannot be fully exploited today due to unpredictable effects on product lifetime and quality. The project D-Sign is specifically dedicated to develop, implement and test an advanced design tool which adapts, integrates and enhances existing simulation models for different thermal processes with state-of-the-art design techniques.

With the implementation of D-Sign, a feedback of consequences of manufacturing processes will be brought to the designer, thus reducing costly prototype loops. Already during lifetime, the project will lead to an improved understanding of the new processes and materials, which gives higher confidence for industry to introduce them. In medium term, the design process will be optimised in providing the designer with the necessary process and production knowledge by interactive simulation. In the long term, the project will contribute to an improved understanding of product design as a process of combining requested product features, like e.g. character, quality and cost, with material properties and production processes. Due to the diversity of experience needed, the proposed European industrial R&D project comprises of 7 partners from different areas. Two large end users from metal processing industry, both well situated on the world-wide market, are specifying basic requirements to the three tool developers, all very agile and growing SMEs in the areas of modelling, process simulation and design software, well experienced in thermal processing and welding. Two academic partners provide the scientific basis and introduce their deep knowledge and experience of welding and cutting processes and materials into the project. BE97-4693
