European thematic network on extractive industries

Obiettivo

EUROTHENPROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Extractive Industries sector encompasses all industrial activities related to the exploration, exploitation and processing of ores, industrial minerals and ornamental stones. The sector is facing the challenge to secure a clean, uninterrupted and environmentally sustainable supply of resources in a cost-effective and competitive way. Despite recent declines, this is a very important economic sector in the EU. Extractive Industries ensure that mineral deposits are identified, mined and the produced ores or industrial minerals are further processed to produce the finished products to cover the needs of modern society. Extractive industries have to fulfill this function in a cost effective, competitive and environmentally sustainable manner. The broad aim of EUROTHEN is to create an organised interface between the various projects supported by the EC in the field of Extractive Industries.

The main objectives are:
- To provide a European forum for the development, dissemination and exchange of scientific and technological knowledge and ideas relating to all aspects of the Extractive Industries: exploration, exploitation, processing, environmental aspects;
- To accelerate dissemination and exploitation of results;
- To inform relevant EU and Member States R&TD Programme Planners of the research priorities, to improve the synergy and coordination of research being carried out in EC Programmes and take the necessary initiatives at EU and Member State levels;
- To interact between industry and regulatory authorities with respect to sustainable development.

EUROPEAN DIMENSION AND PARTNERSHIP:
The establishment of the EUROTHEN has been accepted by academic researchers and industrial organisations by great enthusiasm. From the very beginning a high level of support has been expressed and over 25 Brite-Euram projects had accepted to participate in the network. The proposed Network is truly trans-European, as it encompasses124 industrial and academic/ ROR partners from all 15 members states of the EU. It has a heavily industrial orientation, as65 % of the partners are industrial companies, ranging from large to SMEs and encompasses producers, equipment manufacturers and engineering companies. It is believed that the network will make a significant contribution towards ensuring that the problems are approached more systematically and are tackled more efficiently and cost-effectively. The network will serve to stimulate contact and understanding between groupings which will use their scientific and technical expertise and develop better solutions to the problem.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS:
The Network is expected to have a high added value in terms of technology potential as it will be instrumental in helping participants in complementary projects covering different technologies of the programme and having complementary capabilities to coordinate their activities, in an efficient way, avoiding wasteful overlaps, effecting technology transfer and shortening the learning curve. The potential for commercial exploitation and marketing of the technologies developed will be expanded cause of the Network activities, as the research results will be more efficiently diffused to potential users. Also the interaction among different disciplines and the interbreeding among many sectors will create a wider scope of application for technologies established, developed and applied in one field that will be easily transferred to other fields (e.g. exploration technologies developed for the identification of mineral deposits can easily be applied for identification of pollution plumes, mining technologies can be applied to civil engineering works.

The actions that will be included in EUROTHEN are:
- Organisation of an annual Contractor s workshop;
- Organisation of the EC-CANMET-meeting biannually;
- Exchange of researchers between the various projects for the technology, and expertise transfer;
- Publication of the proceedings of the workshop and meetings;
- Publication of a quarterly newsletter (available as hardcopy and though the Internet).

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
