Thematic network advanced manufacturing systems II - extension of the existing TEAMS thematic network

Ziel

TEAMS II
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The extension TEAMS-II adds 11 further running Brite-Euram
projects to the existing Thematic Network - Advanced
Manufacturing Systems (TEAMS). The structure of the Thematic Network is enlarged.
The horizontal approach of this network will bring together end users, machine builders, suppliers and research institutes
structured in different clusters. All participating parties will contribute to the dialogue between the various projects in each cluster as well as between different clusters in the
network. This Thematic Network is intended to contribute
actively to European co-ordination of R&D efforts.
TEAMS II allows to join the efforts in labour intensive sectors and to initiate innovations in order to maintain European
manufacturing industries competitive. The "real time" exchange of information on technological aspects of related projects
will lead to much better R&D co-ordination and establish
itself a network of very strategic importance. The included projects will increase the future exploitation of results and will be motivated to reach the settled targets due to the links to other similar and parallel conducted projects.
The clustering reflects the awareness of future technology
trends regarding major industry objectives in improved
manufacturing. The triangle of cost, quality and time, which are major industry and business constrains, needs a market
orientated answers in form of new processes, reliable systems and concrete applications for lead-time
EUROPEAN DIMENSION AND PARTNERSHIP
The European machine tool sector consists of a large majority of small and medium sized enterprises. In front of
international competition, the technological leadership of
European industry is still a key element for a strong market position. The business environment in terms of production
cost, quality and origanisation is of course the fundamental basis for the actual companies" situation and market shares
but, due to the fundamental technical orientation of a product like a machine tool, the continuous improvement of the
technical solutions oriented towards the user's requirements and market conditions are most important for the individual
company's future. The Thematic Network will bring a lot added value in this regard.
Most of all European mechanical or electronic industries
strongly depend on highly sophisticated manufacturing systems in the form of machine tools. No product, car, airplane,
machinery and consumer electronics or whatever is manufactured without machine tools. TEAMS II will help to orient the
European manufacturing technology towards leading edge RTD.
The network has a wide range of projects included. The
horizontal approach, bringing different applications, sectors or technologies together in one cluster will lead to a very
important dialogue between the different clusters.
The Thematic Network - Advanced Manufacturing Systems will
contribute to the strengthening of the competitiveness of the European manufacturing industries and be important element for international European co-operation in this field. It might be a starting point for larger activities and surely an important activity to integrate the user needs on an European level
POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
A large number of SMEs are working in the engineering
industries using machine tools as production means. More than 7 million people are employed in these industries. Especially the mechanical engineering sector and the transportation
industries are the main users of machine tools. These two
industries employ together more than 4 million people in the European Union.
It will not be possible to substantially increase levels of
employment and consolidate the revival in growth in the Union unless they are based on efficient, innovatory industry
operating within an effective regulatory framework combined
with a more labour-intensive development model. Steps must be taken to ensure that the European Union remains an attractive site for production and investment, including investment from outside the Union.
