European vehicle passive safety network

Obiettivo



Research and Technological Development (R&TD) is essential for improving the impact motor vehicles have on our society. Vehicle safety is a key issue in this respect. In spite of the significant improvements in vehicle safety, which were achieved in the past 25 years, the current number of deaths and injuries plus all the associated social and economical costs, are still regarded as unacceptable. Vehicle safety experts world-wide agree that significant further reductions in fatalities and injuries can be achieved due to passive safety measures like the use of new energy absorption materials, improvement of the efficiency of passive safety systems by advanced control (intelligent restraint systems) and the introduction of new vehicle crash tests which take the compatibility between vehicles and road users under different crash conditions into account. This proposal for a thematic network aims to establish a basis for co-operation between the European automotive industry, suppliers of safety systems, research institutes and universities active in the field of passive safety.

The objectives of the network can be summarised as: - integration of advanced new technologies and harmonisation of research requirements as basis for future legislation; - facilitate technology transfer to accelerate dissemination of on-going research activities, including Community funded (R&TD) projects; - facilitate co-operation between industry, research organisations and authorities to overcome system complexity and to maintain global competitiveness; - identify 'white spots' and initiate new R&TD projects in the area's of vehicle safety, materials, biomechanics, computer simulation.
