Targeted research action in aerospace aerodynamics

Obiettivo

The world Commercial Aircraft market is currently worth about $37 Billion, of which European industry has been successful in securing a 35% share. Current assessments of future market trends suggest an annual value growth of between 4.6-5.9%, underlining the socio-economic importance of the Civil Aircraft market to Europe. The importance of Aerodynamics in supporting the Aerospace market is recognised across Europe and is reflected in the level of investment going into the area at the corporate, national and European level. Similarly in the US a substantially funded (About $500 Millions per annum) well co-ordinated programme exists, key elements of which are focussed upon supporting US indigenous industries. Though it is unlikely that Europe can afford to match the levels of funding in the US, it has been recognised that we can make far better use of the money we have available through industrially focussed enhanced co-ordination and strategic networking. This proposal is targeted at creating an operational framework to facilitate a better co-ordination of industrially focussed European aerodynamic RTD.

The whole enterprise revolves around the concept of a Strategic Plan for European Aerospace Aerodynamics, where that plan:
- Is derived from the real needs of industry, in terms of technical, commercial and business requirements;
- Is developed in collaboration with Europe's technical experts and business managers;
- Is implemented and executed with the best technical resources Europe has to offer;
- Will deliver real, measurable value into the Aerospace industry, Ensuring that we make the best use of what Europe has to offer in defining, implementing and securing the future for industrially focussed European Aerodynamic RTD.

Through the use of a TRA management board, supported by 8 technically focussed Key Technology Area (KTA) advisory clusters, a first version of the strategic vision will be developed over the first 5-7 months of the programme. The resulting plan will then be implemented and maintained in subsequent months/years. Key element of the programme involve the use of-several different networking/planning vehicles such as workshops, new sheets, benchmark studies, electronic conferencing & www server technologies, focussed European Aerodynamic conferences and where appropriate inter-project technology transfer. The proposed TRA initially involves bringing together 13 projects, although it is envisaged that with time the membership is likely to increase both in terms of type of project involvement and numbers of projects/organisations involved. Though TRA support will be channelled through 6 core organisations, support is realised from the broad European Aerospace Industrial community.
