Diamond-like carbon coatings for improved wear resistance of textile machine parts - DIWATEX

The DIWATEX project aimed to resolve the friction and wear problems encountered in the textile industry by means of low cost, high quality diamond-like carbon (DLC) protective coatings. Research involved: the selection of representative textile machinery components and their classification in model wear cases; a systematic investigation of the prevailing wear mechanisms that occur during use of textile machinery components and the development of simulating tests to enable the cost effective evaluation of the coated components; development of an advanced coating process enabling the deposition of DLC films with high quality at low cost on complex 3D objects; evaluation of the performance of selected coated parts in the field. Results showed that in most cases the DLC coating yielded an improvement of wear resistance on textile machine components. However, the current coating cost is still too high for mostly low-valued mass volume components. It is expected that in the short term DLC coatings will be used for niche-applications.
