Obiettivo
The hides received by the tannery have an extremely irregular shape and in order to facilitate their processing the leather manufacturer needs to trim the hides at several stages in the process. As the trimming is carried out further along the processing line, the relative value of the trimmings and their disposal costs increase. If trimming could be restricted to the earliest stages of the process, savings could be made in both chemical consumption and disposal costs. A single trimming operation at the earliest stage of the process would create an incentive for the early geometrisation of hides as regular shaped hides are a prerequisite for the automation of mechanical operations. Early geometrisation of hides, and subsequent automation of mechanical processes, would increase the efficiency of leather manufacturing and improve the working conditions, particularly in the "vet' side of the process A further benefit of the early geometrisation of hides would be an improved cutting efficiency for shoe and other leathergoods manufacturers (leather users). Taking these issues into consideration, it has been identified that there is a need for the geometrisation of hides at the earliest possible stage of the leather manufacturing chain It is the objective of this projects to: Demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the early geometrisation of calf and bovine hides through the development of a prototype machine for the automatic cutting. The results of the project will reveal the technical and economic feasibility of the early geometrisation for the specific tannery-leather user couples which participate. This means that the feasibility is determined for the particular raw materials, tanning processes, and products which have been the focus of this project. The equipment manufacturer participating in the project will start commercialisation of the prototype once automatic geometrisation has been proven technically and economically feasible. It is estimated that within three to six years after completion of the project the potential market for the European equipment manufacturer would be approximately 10 to 20 machines. After six years the European market will increase to a total of approximately 100 machines It is expected that once the machine has established its market position in Europe, the machine manufacturer can expand its market with a potential of selling another 1000 machines world-wide
