The project involves the textile industry, more precisely the household linen manufacturing sector. The project is going to study and develop a new manufacturing concept intended for the production of household linen in Europe. The majority of the large household linen markets are at present subcontracted and the products are manually made in low-wage (developping and eastern) countries. often faraway. There is 200 household linen manufacturing companies in Europe. However because of organisational changes in large scale distribution, (shortening of delivery time, reduction of stocks) the european bedlinen manufactuers are encountering more and more problems in subcontracting to these faraway manufacturers. In order to respond to these new exigences of the buoyant markets and to assure large volume production while remaining at a competitive price, the proposers of this project wish to develop a new manufacturing concept automating household linen production. With this new manufacturing concept the objective is to realize a manufacturing line totally automated, flexible and modular. In other words, both the manufacturing operations and the process regulation changes will be automated; this double evolution corresponds to an important innovation comparing with the existing market solutions. This objective leads to develop innovative solutions for some actual manual or semi-automated operations : - Double cutting with 2 different lenghts; - Inline buttonholes realization and inline buttons fixing; - Linen turning and folding at the end of the manufacturing cycle, for standard and reversible household linen production. So, there are 2 levels of innovation in the project : - first level : design and general organization of the new manufacturing concept; - second level: automation of several new operations. It is important for the partners to be aware of the industrial and economic stakes of the project. There exists an enormous european market accessible to the proposers if they offer a household line based on productivity an quality of service. Indeed, the shortening of delivery time is the main trump card in gaining market share. In addition, if this new concept allows the manufacturing of top of the range varieties, the proposers could even reach all potential european clients. Regarding employment, the development of the new concept will allow : - the preservation of european jobs in the textile industry by avoiding delocalization due to productivity gains; - the creation of employment due to the new market share acquired by the setting up of these new manufacturing methods; - the creation of specialized jobs for production management and control. There are several reasons for international corporation: first of all it will permit access to international markets. Secondly to collate the different existing technologies in different countries. Finally in a single country it is difficult to assembly all the necessary stakeholders. The partnership of the project is highly complementary. End-users in several different fields that have to cope with the same problems will try to work together helped by a R&D group.
