Abrasive particulate deposition using electrostatics

Obiettivo

Industry in general and the aerospace and automotive industries in particular are demanding closer tolerances of their machined components and this requires that the accuracy of the associated cutting, grinding and profile dressing tools needs to be precisely controlled. Current practice in the manufacture of high precision tools involves the use of an adhesive film for the temporary retention of cutting particulates in a mould prior to an electro-plating process being carried out which then holds the particulates permanently. Although the adhesive film thickness is controlled to +/- 5 microns, its presence prevents the particulates from resting against the precise mould profile thus leading to inaccuracy in the finished tool. In addition, as the adhesive dries the particulates tend to move in an undefined way and this produces a layer of particulate whose height above the mould surface can be highly non-uniform.The dimensional accuracy of some of the most highly toleranced components in the aerospace and automotive industries is therefore compromised because of the use of the adhesive film. The objectives of this proposal are to employ Electrostatic fields to effect the controlled deposition and temporary retention of solid particulates on a substrate without the need for a retentive adhesive. In addition the technology will also be applied to the separation and orientation of particulates. The resultant tools will have sub-micron dimensional accuracy. The project would enable the Partners to gain a considerable commercial advantage over their competitors and to significantly increase their turnover and profitability within about a year of completion of the project. The Partners are well aware of the technological competition from the Far East, and this project aims to keep Europe ahead of this. The Partners are all experts in their field and have the necessary experience to ensure that the project would receive the resources to ensure its success. It is also intended to license some of the technology ( appropriately modified or adapted ) to other EU companies on completion of the project. The technologies developed here will result in a substantial improvement in the quality of engineered products and this would lead to their greater reliability and operating efficiency. A combination of experimental and theoretical investigations coupled with good project management and regular meetings between the Partners will ensure the successful execution of the project.
