Based upon the completed exploratory phase (Step I), the scientific and technical objective of the project is the investigation and optimisation of coating processes for injection molds in order to increase the quality of thermoplastic injection molded parts. As a result of the coating, the economic efficiency of the injection molding process shall be improved by reducing the cooling time by up to 25 %. The overall aim of the project is the investigation and testing of surface and layer technologies to improve the quality of the thermoplastic parts as well as to increase the productivity in order to help secure production locations in Europe. The participating project partners, 1 tool manufacturing company, 3 coating companies with different coating processes and 1 plastics processing company complement each other perfectly. For one, because this partnership comprises the entire production chain in this branch of industry. Secondly, because it covers all commonly used surface and layer technologies for injection molds needed for this application. Based on the exploratory phase, the analysis of the actual state is UPDATED. Afterwards, in cooperation with the coating companies, layer materials will be developed, that fulfill the previously described characteristics. Sampling molds will be produced at Thermoform Kunststofftechnik, which will later on be coated by means of different processes and with the corresponding coatings at Mauer, Hauzer and Haslinger and sampled in the "Technikum", the pilot plant of the Kunststoff-Institut. Optical characteristics, demolding behavior of the different types of plastic and economic efficiency will be analyzed by means of mold proving. Parallel to that, the physical layer characteristics necessary for the calculation of the contact temperature are determined. Afterwards, long-term examinations at the plastics processors Kaiser and Thermoform are necessary to evaluate the tool life behavior. It is the aim of this project to find or, if necessary, develop layer materials and to test their production capability, in order to find a way of economically producing products of high optical quality. This is impossible as for today, because quality and economic efficiency contradict each other too much. Furthermore, a simulation software is to be developed, that will make it possible to simulate the contact temperatures for different types of plastic and different mold surfaces. This would provide the entire plastics processing industry with a practical tool for selecting surface treatments, incl. economic factors.
