Task 9 M18 Project final reports (1 confidential + 1 for diffusion)

Project's actual outcome:
Task 1: The functional analysis consists in a survey through a questionnaire submitted to cereal agents of agro-food industry. Concerning the utilisation, the equipment will be mostly used to control cereals when collected and to monitor the quality of stocks. Concerning the design, the suggested composition in one or two modules (central unit and sensor) linked by a thread, seems to suit to potential users.
Task 2: The sensors have an important sensibility and can be electronically tuned to give a fifteen cm detection distance.
Task 3: The goal was to record most of the signal samples that are necessary to drive the design and to assess the detection, classification and density estimation algorithms. In order to get information about noise disturbance on industrial sites, some recordings were realised with antenna used in a truck (motor on), in a wagon and in silos. So there is records for representatives combinations of content-container-insect.
Task 4: The global function of detection executes a signal analysis to show the relevant elements that denote the presence of the effective signal and decides of the presence or not of the effective signal from the previous information. The classification and identification of the specie of the detected insects are able to distinguish the types of insects. The density estimation strategy is based on a statistical calculation applied to an on-line data acquisition.
Task 5: A first analyser laboratory mock-up was realised. It is made up of an antenna with sensors and a PC for the analysis of the signal. It allows developing and testing easily the detection software in laboratory. This mock-up gives the information of detection, classification and estimation of density of insects.
Task 6: The prototype is finished and ready to be tested in real condition. It is made of the antenna, the central unit linked by a 5 meters long cable. It respects the specifications requested by the users (Task 1) for the ergonomy and use facilities.
Task 7: An easy and functional user handbook and test forms were written out in French, Italian and Spanish. It allows planning the task 8 in good condition.
Task 8: Users validation is finished. The tests allowed the validation of the prototype and showed some needed evolutions.
Task 9: On progress.
Dry food products like cereals or coffee or cattle food in agro food industry necesseraly goes through stocking phase! during their processing. They are piled up in silos (4000 sites in Europe) just after the harvest, in containers, wagons trucks, ships while transportation and in warehouses or containers when they have been packed, while waiting for process or distribution. Unfortunately, these stocks represent a breeding ground particularly appreciated by insects. The consequences are of 2 kinds: - the pests can damage up to 30 % of the products, - the expenses for insecticides (used sometimes preventively) are huge, - the development of bio products requires a detection of insects and grubs that is more and more precise. The present analysis method for the detection of insects is based on the sampling. It requires laboratory tests and car not be done easily and quickly on site. The objective of the project is to develop a portable (15Kg at max) analysing equipement based on the real time technology, multi sensor, multi support (wheat, barley, corn, rice, beans, ...) and multi application (grain stocked in silo, in containers, wagons, trucks, ...). This system will be able to: O monitor the quality of the products provided by suppliers, O control the presence of insects on stocking sites,O do analysis quickly on site, O help for the identification of invisible shapes hidden in grain, O help for the decision on the treatments to be done on the seeds and grains. It is important to notice that today, following the anteriority search that has been done: existing devices are based on obsolete technologies, no running project or product (existing or being developed), is transportable and easy to use.
