This proposal was prepared with the help of an Exploratory Award. This project addresses a new and innovative method of tracking the production in textile dyeing and finishing industry. Therefore, the project goal is to prototype a system for tracking in real time the products in the plant and to build a demonstrator within a textile factory. The main aim of this project is to develop an electronic tag resistant to all the dyeing and finishing processes and build a demonstrator within a dyeing plant. The tag, being small and ultra thin, will be mounted to the fabric once the fabric enters the plant. The unique electronic code stored in the tag will be used to track the fabric through the processes in the plant and thereby keeping control of all the fabrics in the plant. Electronic readers, used to read the code of the tag, will be placed at important places in the production line. It is also intended in this project to build a lab prototype and software for demonstration. The main advantage of the system proposed in this project is to allow a substantial increase of production flexibility and process control, avoiding exchanges of production orders and out of schedule deliveries. The tracking process is specially important for this sector because a typical dye, finishing and printing company works with a lot of different clients; a lot of different kinds of fabrics, and with different procedures involved in the same process, comprising chemical preliminary treatment, dyeing, printing and finishing. This sector registered, in 1995, according to 'EURATEX', a market share of 9 000 million ECU, approximately, being responsible as well for a 4 500 million ECU EU productivity. Therefore, this kind of enterprise has to be well organised, to avoid delivering a fabric to the wrong client or to make different from the requested. Nowadays, producing orders makes the tracking process. These orders are placed with the fabric and follow all the process until the dispatching warehouse. However, an exchange or these orders can ruin all the process control. As result the production costs substantially increases and the delivering schedule will be postpone. Other important added value of the proposed project is the possibility of being used in others sectors, as industrial laundry, hospital clothing and textile ennoblement. These sectors deal also with a great variety of clothing and, therefore, an effective tracking system is needed. Besides the economic and technical advantages, the automatic tracking system can also constitute a precedent to the establishment of standards for the production monitoring.
