Development of leading edge, low cost lithium-ion batteries for traction and static applications

Obiettivo

The principal constraint to the large scale introduction of battery powered vehicles is the lack of a suitable battery having sufficient capacity (specific energy) and most importantly low cost. A group of European electric vehicle SMEs have identified an appropriate battery technology which promises a 100% increase in the specific energy of existing Japanese manufactured Lithium ion batteries at the production cost of existing lead acid batteries. This Project is the development of this new low cost Lithium ion battery. The partner consortium includes: two SME electric vehicle specialists with comprehensive electric vehicle know how and technology, two SME electric vehicle manufacturers who aim to use the battery in current and near future vehicles to demonstrate the lowering of the barriers to the technical and commercial viability of zero emission vehicles, one SM:E specialist battery manufacturing c&mpany having considerable in house Lithium ion experience and which has been awarded a patent relating to this new Lithium ion battery, one SME developing and supplying specialist material for the battery and two electrochemical research and development RTDs one of which is a battery specialist. The Technical objectives are: (a) To leap frog existing Lithium ion battery technology in the Project based on; new cathode technology replacing expensive cobalt by iron new metal coated plastic and new lower cost wound construction new materials to design a hermetically sealed system at atmospheric pressure using new construction technology having lighter weight (plastic materials) (b) To achieve an energy density of at least 1 50Whr.per kg the target being 200WHrs per kg. and a specific peak power of some 500W per kg. together with a 20°C to + 60°C operational temperature range and safe under abuse conditions especially overheating and fire. (c) To develop the associated traction drive and battery management algorithms. (d) To test complete prototype traction battery assemblies under temperature cycling, mechanical testing and electrical operational conditions. (e) To integrate batteries into typical small vehicle applications for demonstration and test. The work is structured as a parallel development The deliverables are: (1) An electric car and scooter both powered by prototype batteries using the 15AHr. cells for demonstration and totally integrated on board systems. (2) A prototype battery charger and integrated battery management system (3) A fully documented Production Plan for the scaling up of the Project to pilot production
