Obiettivo
Hydrophobing of leather is a/ming to the induction of a 'perverse' or 'abnormal' substrate behaviour. The chief objective of this project is the introduction of the foundations of the desired perverse hydrophobic character of the finished product as early as possible in the chain of leather manufacture processes' namely the tanning process. and thereafter closely monitor its development at each productive stage e to follow. Moreover, the already enacted or impending Environmental regulations for metal emissions control other than chrome (III) at National and Regional level, as well as the requirements for top quality high value products, clearly justify the evaluation of some of the following innovative processes and materials for the production of hydrophobic automotive/upholstery leather and leather for leather goods, during the execution phase of this project: - Semi metal tanning, using metals other than aluminum (III), e.g. Ti(III) and Zr, High stability organic tanning, based on natural plant polyphenols, namely heat driven combined tannages with the utilisation of condensed veg tannins and aldehydic crosslinkers, e.g. oxazolidine - Purely synthetic organic tanning processes. It will be a co operative type of RTD project, with the participation of five (5) Tanneries from three (3) European Countries two (2) members and one (1) associated member , in conjunction with three (3) reputable RTD Performers, experts in Leather Technology and Science. The final product of this project will be (a) complete tanning, wet post tanning and finishing system (s) for the production of automotive / upholstery leather and leather for leather goods, implemented on site at five (5) Tanneries, that aim: - Total substitution of conventional chromium (III) tannage. Accelerate total replacement of vegetable tannins and metal based tanning agents with synthetic organic tanning agents. - Improvement in water resistance. - Uniformity of hydrophobic effect throughout the leather. -Minimum impairment of other desirable natural characteristics of leather. Good aqueous finishing systems adhesion. - Minimisation of exhausted tanning liquors treatment and VOC control costs. Moreover the novel hydrophobic leather processing system(s) should ensure: - Product quality consistency. Cost effective Industrial application. Availability and non prohibitive price of auxiliary materials. Ease in application on the large scale under normal Tannery conditions Product system(s) will incorporate a reliable quality control system selected for the evaluation of the leathers produced, according to specific end user product requirements (Product Quality Values), as well as simple and efficient technical auditing on the Tannery shop floor for process monitoring and control. Brite Euram III Areas covered by the proposal are 1.2.1.S 1.2.4.S 1.2.2.M and 2.2.1.M.
