Material investigations and advanced methods of production and quality control for bowed instruments

Obiettivo

The most promising and innovative aspect about the proposed project is the active collaboration between professional violin makers, bow makers, and string producers across Europe never before undertaken. This is specifically important because in the eyes of musicians these three components form an organic unity. All three fields of production are serving the professional needs of musicians and have to take their preferences into consideration. It must be stressed that no 'ideal' violin will ever exist, nor a perfect bow or string. However, good instruments have for centuries been distinguished from lesser ones by musicians. While tastes vary from musician to musician, certain objective criteria any good instrument must fulfill can be identified. It is the task of violin makers, bow makers, and string producers to adapt their production to customers' demands. To be able to answer those demands in a direct way, the producers must be in a position to systematically influence and control! the behaviour of the instrument, bow, or string to satisfy the individual preferences of customers. Through consciously performed research and increased productive exchange between proposed project partners representing some of Europe's finest companies, the quality of violins, bows and strings may be substantially improved. It is the belief of proposing partners that such long term qualitychange can only be effected by virtue of an orientation towards the demands of customers, i.e. the active participation of the artists. It can be said, that musical instrument production is a perfect example for the necessary meeting between science and art. Thus, the aim of the project cannot be to solve scientific problems of violin acoustics but to use scientific knowledge combined with practical experience for the explicit goal of developing reliable tools and methods for production and quality control of stringed instruments. The project is based on a thorough review of existing studies, scientific know how, and expertise in the fields involved. The selected partners bring their enormous practical experiences to the project, as well as a sound scientific background in all areas of musical acoustics. As much as the long tradition of violin making originated in central Europe, where such masters as Stradivari, Amati, Bergonsi, or Montaniana perfected their craft, the project thrives to continue and protect this unique European heritage.
