Demanding process chains for plastics prototypes

Obiettivo

Due to new market conditions and shorter product cycles there is a need in manufacturing industry to reduce costs and time to market. A crucial point of the development is the manufacturing of physical prototypes. Their requirements differ according to the development stage, and can be divided in the 4 broad groups design, functionality, technical testing and pre series parts. Since the end of the 1980s the application of time and cost saving Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques has increased significantly. Today for design and first function and assembly tests such prototypes are considered to be state of the art. Nevertheless there is still a great demand on parts for technical testing, pre or even small series. Actual RP systems are not, respectively very limited, able to deliver technical prototypes with properties similar to the required series product especially if parts in high class thermoplastics like polyamide or filled plastics are required. The main objective of the project is to realise high performance technical or functional prototypes and therewith initiating new applications along three main axes: Task 1: Improvement of laser sintered parts by infiltration techniques (especially using cast polyamide) aimed to get real functional prototypes (1 5 parts). Task 2: Casting with castable polyamide into silicone rubber tools and resin moulds for thermo stable technical prototypes with series part properties (5 50 parts). Task 3: Improvement of plastic injection moulding for high temperature, filled or reinforced materials in RPT moulds (50 500 parts). The results from these 3 tasks will deliver the possibility to get prototypes for a wide range of new applications which presently cannot be delivered by the available RP and postprocessing techniques. The techniques and the investigations presented in the three tasks are also oriented on the required batch sizes. Especially the cast polyamide technique will open a wide range of new applications. Therewith the RlM machine constructor as well as the other involved industry partners will enhance their market spectrum. From those new technologies and process chains to be developed not only the participants but also other European SMEs and the customers from automotive and other industries will benefit. As European manufacturing business is competing with businesses throughout the world, it is essential that we make every effort to reduce the lead time and costs of our products to help them compete in marketplace. The better the prototype material properties fulfil the required properties of the series product, the less iteration steps are necessary within product development.
