Recovery of fibre from mechanical pulp rejects and its use in board manufacture

Ziel

This proposal concerns the development and optimisation of technology for the recovery of fibre from mechanical pulp mill rejects, and its use in high density board production; preliminary work has established the viability of recovery of such fibre and using it as part of the furnish for board production. This project will optimise the new technology through the construction and use of a new pilot plant. The fibre recovered will be used in the production of boards. Subsequent trials will establish that the new boards are acceptable in a wide variety of end uses, including shoe components, stationery, shop displays, animal boxes, and toys. The industrial objective is the reduction of the amount of sludge sent to landfill, and the provision of a new, consistent and acceptable raw material for a sector of the industry facing considerable competition (for raw materials in the KU, and for markets from outside the KU). The technical and economic objectives are to achieve the industrial objectives cost effectively. The social objective is to reduce landfill, and to support the many SME's (particularly in Southern Europe in the shoe industry) dependent on the availability of consistent, high quality board at acceptable prices. The proposal involves 9 SME's, involved in all stages of the exploitation chain: 3 equipment producers, a board producer, 4 board processors and end users and a compost producer. The Consortium is well placed to exploit the results within the high density board sector. The Consortium is already forming plans to transfer technology to other parts of the pulp and paper industry, throughout the KU.
