MODEL EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS FOR INTEGRATED ENERGY EFFICIENT DESIGN

Ziel

The overall aim of the MEDUCA-project is to demonstrate that energy efficient educational buildings, where the requirements for an attractive and healthy indoor environment are fulfilled, can be designed and built. This is to be achieved in new construction and refurbishment combining conventional and innovative technologies.
The aim is to create educational buildings, which will stand out as exemplary models of optimised integrated energy efficient design for new schools to be build or refurbished in the city/region where they are located, and which can also serve as the basis for the development of improved standards for this type of buildings in Europe.
Specifically it is the aim that the penetration of an integrated quality technological appraoch to energy efficient design of educational buildings as standard practice at local level and in the countris of the proposers will be the results of this co-operation.
QUALITATIVE EVALUATION:
In the MEDUCA project it was decided to carry out a qualitative evaluation based on a questionnaire developed in Sweden. Below is a summary of the first results achieved at the Danish school. The section of the Danish school identified for the MEDUCA project was subdivided in two parts of equal size C1 & C2. C1 was defined as a reference case for the qualitative user evaluation of C2. The user evaluation was carried through by letter all pupils and teachers in the two sections answer to a questionnaire developed by the Stockholm office of statistics and research in Sweden. 8 Teachers and 120 pupils from the C2 section and 9 teachers and 72 pupils from the C1 section participated. The questionnaire had 17 main questions an several sub-questions.The general picture of all questions is an overall improvement of the indoor comfort quality in the C2 section compared to the reference.

CONTINUOUS MONITORING:
A monitoring programme developed according to the commonly agreed to monitoring procedure of the MEDUCA project has been launched on the BEMS system. Plots of indoor temperatures, CO2-levels, etc. can now be generated for each class room in the Danish and Swedish schools. For the other building projects this will follow.
The MEDUCA project encompasses 8 demonstration projects in 7 countries. 6 of the projects are refurbishments (DK, DE, NO, SE, GR, ES) and 4 are new constructions (NO, SE, IT, GR).
- DK : Egebjerg School is a typical school from the seventies. The project covers the integration of high levels of thermal insulation, low E-windows, healthy materials, energy management systems, natural ventilation, optimum daylight, energy efficient fans, combined natural and mechanical ventilation, preheating of ventilation air using air solar collectors, passive solar energy, active solar energy for hot water heating.
- DE: Wittorfer school : refurbishment of an existing common school. Emphasis on an advanced building energy management system, that changes the school to a "smart house";
- NO : Grong School : Renewal of the school and community house is part of a larger program on bringing urban qualities to the density built-up area.
- SE : Hökegard School & Brännö school : two projects will be carried out, refurbishment of an old school and the construction of a new school. The two projects are to be cost-effective examples of efficient integration of innovative energy technologies on large scale in the Urban Environment.
- IT : Environmental Education Centre : a new building located at the entrance of the natural suburban park of Monte Catalfano at Bagheria, will act as "Environmental Education Centre", comprising laboratories directed by research institutions, classrooms, exhibitions halls.
- GR : European public Law Centre : Th eproject integrates several renewable technologies and daylighting techniques as well as optimum control of the energy demand and the operation of the enegry supplying systems.
- ES : University of Almeria : A patio at the University is to be covered by a roof with integrated PV cells. The electricity is to be used to refrigerate and move the water in the summer, and to move the air using fans in the winter.
