ENERGY (Comfort 2000) [PHASE 2]

Ziel

EC2000, via its 8 project sites, aims to demonstrate new low energy, environmentally friendly, non-domestic buildings. By considering the use of energy by every aspect of the building, the aim is to minimise overall energy consumption whilst maintaining full comfort for occupants. One important aspect is the avoidance of air conditioning, or where conditions require it, the minimisation of the use and consumption of the system. The energy target for all buildings is 50% of that used by typical, similar use buildings conventionally designed. The projects aim to demonstrate a range of different energy saving technologies, in 6 different countries and make the results widely available for dissemination.
The full projects results will not be available until late 1997 or early 1998 when is complete. For the detailed designs of the first four buildings, energy calculations show that designs are meeting or exceeding the 50% energy consumption target, with acceptable internal conditions. On the first completed building where monitoring has started, the first result was to expose faulty control settings of the night ventilation system (which resulted in higher than anticipated internal temperatures during a hot summer). Nevertheless initial indications are that overall energy consumption over the first year was below predictions. Other results and experience of the project are being collected together and made available as "Information Dossiers". These will include a range of topics, including "Fire Safety in Atria", "Passive Ventilation in new Office Buildings", "Clients and contracts for low energy buildings", Windows etc.
Eight new buildings are included.
LISBON (PO). This competition winning project comprises a 17,000 seat sports arena with a secondary exhibition and conference room. Designed to give the appearance of an upturned boat in keeping with the "Oceans" theme of EXPO 98, the laminated wood dome is covered in aluminium. Displacement ventilation with heating or cooling from the district mains and river water for pre-cooling, is used during events. Passive ventilation and daylighting are used when there are no events. Completely early 1998 ready for the EXPO opening.
VALLADOLID (ES). This development of 13,000 square metres on four storeys is designed to provide a working demonstration of active and passive solar energy. Every part of the construction contributes to the energy efficiency of the whole, whilst providing good comfort for occupants in the highly variable climate of Valladolid. The project remains as a design study as it was not finally constructed under EC2000 due to planning and financial reasons.
AIX-EN-PROVENCE (FR). Another architectural competition winner in the south of France provides a range of lecture rooms, offices and other facilities for students, researchers and staff within a 2 and 3 storey development of 6,000 square metre. Arranged round courtyards, the building maximises the use of daylighting, natural ventilation, nightcooling and passive solar gain. Completed September 1997.
ATHENS (HE). Built on a narrow site, this seven storey head office building is designed to operate without using its air conditioning system, for much of the year despite the hot climate of Athens. Vertical shading devices on the eastern facade are used, combined with use of thermal mass, passive ventilation and rooms fans. Completed in June 1998.
ENSCHEDE (NL). This 4,000 square metre office is a model for future developments. The energy design has been integrated from the early days. It makes use of extensive daylighting and is passively ventilated with the aid of central atria. Nightime ventilation combined with use of thermal mass keep temperatures within the Rgd standards. Completed. Monitoring shows very low energy consumption with the building well liked by occupants.
SCHIEDAM (NL). 19,000 square metres of facilities are provided in this large development, including a library, offices, archives, a theatre and conference facilities. High insulation levels, daylighting and natural ventilation are all used where possible in different parts of the buildings. Completed February 1998.
CHELMSFORD (UK). The first building on the new site of Anglia Polytechnic University is this 6,000 square metre Library and offices. With two central atria, the four storey building is fully passively ventilated and makes extensive use of natural lighting. Thermal mass was added to the building to reduce peak temperatures and there are other interesting features such as double light shelves. Completed September 1994. Monitoring shows very low energy consumption with good internal comfort.
LEEDS (UK). This is the first building of the Leeds City Office Park, developed on an old town gas site near the city centre. The highly glazed building totals 6,500 square metres of usable office space, around a central atrium. Mechanical ventilation is used, assisted by the stack effect in the atrium. Solar shading and use of thermal mass play their part in providing adequate comfort conditions all year round. Completed October 1995. occupied July 1998.
