Structure and evolution of extragalactic sources and their relationship to the background radiations

Obiettivo

Investigation of one of the most exciting challenges of modern astrophysics: the evolution of extragalactic sources (galaxies, AGNs, clusters of galaxies), applying a balanced and incisive approach to the study, encompassing data acquisition and analysis, theoretical elaboration, and optimal observational strategies. Building instruments capable of addressing specific scientific issues is equally of primary importance. The project aims to tackle the problem through: observations and modelling of structure and emission properties of nearby objects; selection, photometry and spectroscopy of complete samples to faint flux limits; modelling the evolution of stellar populations in galaxies; observation and modelling of the properties of galaxies and of the intergalactic medium in groups and clusters of galaxies; study of inter-relations between different classes of extragalactic sources; analysis of background radiations and of ensuing constraints on evolution. It is essential to gather data from the entire electromagnetic spectrum, as each waveband carries its own crucial information. The network has played an important role in stimulating exchanges and facilitating contacts between experts in different fields and in providing junior researchers with excellent opportunities for high level training.

Several junior researchers were given the possibility of working for extended periods (of up to 1 year) with forefront research teams.

Programma(i)

Argomento(i)
