Obiettivo
The existing project No EV5V-CT9I-0052 involves six groups in the study of CH4 uptake by soils, and the effect on this soil sink of inputs of N (fertilisers and deposition from the atmosphere). Inclusion of the polish group will widen the range of ecosystems studied and allow investigation of the effects of heavy N deposition on both the CH4 sink and the level of N20 emission.
In the Copenhagen group's work on N20 production in soils under the earlier STEP grant (No CT9O-0028), N20 emissions have been linked with microscale variability in soil aggregates and organic hot-spots, as well as with mesoscale variability along topographic gradients at the landscape level. This has identified likely key factors governing N20 release from different soils. In the programme on CH4 uptake, they already have indications of how various landscape and soil factors affect CH4 uptake activity. Under this proposal, the Copenhagen group will train the Warsaw scientists in the techniques necessary to carry out similar studies in polish ecosystems; this will provide more information on the effects of NOx and S02, on soil CH4 consumption and N20 emission, taking advantage of the steep gradients in concentration and deposition in this region.
In Year 1, field measurements of CH4 uptake by soils will be carried out at the Puszcza Borecka forest, already established as a station in the Global Environment Monitoring System (GIM) of UNEP (site No 14). This site is typical of large areas within poland and Northern Central Europe, the land use being mixed agriculture and deciduous forests with streams, lakes and moors.
In Year 2, measurements will be made of CH4 uptake activity and its dependence on (a) the successional stage of the forest and (b) atmospheric deposition of NOx and S02. The role of the latter factor on N20 emission will be investigated, including work at more sites. Results will be included with those from other participants in construction of predictive flux models.
