Powder painting of plastic materials

Exploitable results

Research was carried out in order to develop powder coating procedures on plastic materials. The following substrate materials have been painted: polypropylene, a wood core covered with sheet moulding compound (SMC), homogeneous SMC and polyamide. The most environmentally friendly painting system is powder painting. If power painting could be used on plastic materials it would not only reduce pollution but also increase the use of plastics as a structural material. Optimized processes have been presented at laboratory-scale for the following: painting polypropylene (PP) modified with 40% talc and PP with talc and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) (pre-treatment is done with a waterborne conductive and adhesion promoting liquid and the powder paint is a low curing epoxy powder); painting two types of substrate materials, SMC-covered wood core and phenolic based wood fibres using a low curing powder paint, epoxy powder (the same processes are possible for both substrates involving horizontal hanging, spraying bottom and top simultaneously, pre-treatment with a waterborne conductive liquid applied by fixed mounted nozzles); painting polyamide (PA6) (pre-treatment is done with a water-borne conductive liquid and polyester powder is used). Best results have been achieved with an acrylic powder and to date there are problems with defects at curing. Work is being carried out with respect to improving the primer.
