It is an electric wheelchair, with a seat height adjustment mechanism from around 33 cm to around 83 cm from the ground, through a cross-bar type of mechanism, with adjustable leg-rests. It includes a seat with enhanced comfort, manually and automatically adjustable to the user's requirements through the use of 2 or more ROHO air-cushions. This wheelchair, in combination with the TRANSWHEEL tie-down system, has been crash-proofed in a frontal crash test at 48 km/h with a Scudo vehicle.
A steel frame guarantees the necessary mechanical rigidity of the wheelchair. The frame encloses the batteries - in this case lead accumulators with solid electrolyte, the drive with the electronic wheelchair control and the servo steering. In addition it contains the "active" pat of the keep-back system.
The seat height is adjusted by a scissors type system which makes it possible to lower the seat down to 33 cm, as necessary, and also to raise it up to 83 cm. This additional effect enhances its appropriateness for everyday use, as with it the reachability of a standing person can be obtained. In the lower position, the crash-worthiness and comfort while driving is guaranteed (low centre of gravity, good visual field, etc.).
The seat is described in more detail in the next project result description form, as it is also the second exploitable result of the project (it can be marketed as stand-alone or in combination with the wheelchair).
The wheelchair data are as follows:
- Length: according to seat height from 1096 mm (seat height 83 cm) up to 1593 mm (seat height 33 cm), including leg rests.
- Width: 560 mm.
- Seat height: from 33 to 83 cm, infinitely variable.
- Weight: about 95 kg.
- Driving range: about 20 km.
- Permissible weight of the user: 120 kg.
The tie-down systems consists of various parts, others mounted on the wheelchair and others mounted on a metallic plate fixed on the vehicle floor. More precisely, a mushroom block is attached on the wheelchair. Two systems are attached on the vehicle floor:
- An anterior metallic fixing, consisting of two blocks in the shape of a hook, which block the front movement of the wheelchair in case of frontal collision and the turning over of the wheelchair in case of rearward collision.
- A posterior fixing, consisting of a metallic plate, bolted on the vehicle floor, where the mushroom block enters and is secured. In case of frontal crash this fixing prevents the wheelchair from turning over. In case of rearward collision, it prevents the rearwards movement through a V-type mechanism.
