Hearing impairment is the most common disability affecting elderly people in Europe, and severe deafness often leads to social and emotional isolation. Velotype is a computer adaptation developed in The Netherlands which enables speech to be transformed into real-time telecaptions which deaf people can then read "live". In Caption Live, a portable wireless text telephone offers an extra microphone and text display, readable by one or several users in single or multiple locations. The deaf person dials the velotypists relay centre, places the microphone near the speaker or sound source, and then sees a real-time transcription of the speaker's words on a display. This is useful in everyday situations (visiting a doctor, sitting in a classroom, watching TV,) and als enables participation in teleconferences etc. Users will be actively involved via the International Federation of Hard of Hearing - Europe.
