FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTION OF FLUFF RDF

Ziel

To effect energy savings by the combustion of fluff Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). The potential energy from the flue gases produced by the RDF combustion amounts to +- 3,900 TOE/y.
The project and tests ended in June 1985. To date it has not been possible to achieve a continuous and stable operation of the plant under nominal conditions,
therefore neither meaningful nor reliable results are available.
Some technical problems remain to be solved, notably to establish a reliable dosing system for the light RDF. The feeding of this material into the reactor was a difficult problem and feeding above the fluidized bed had to be abandoned because combustion tended to take place in the bed. Consequently, the combustion process was unable to maintain the bed temperature in all circumstances.
A feeding system into the bed itself was developed and implemented.
For the heavy RDF fraction combustion, it was necessary to adapt the bed bottom in order to allow an intermittent discharge of the inert materials contained in the heavy RDF and accumulating in the bed.
The project has led to some useful basic results which serve as a contribution towards the commercialisation of the installation; however, further adaptations and trials are still necessary in order to achieve sufficient reliability for the whole process.
The fluidized bed reactor has a bed diameter of 1 m and a free board diameter of 1.6 m. Nominal power output is +- 2,500,000 Kj/h.
In order to avoid excessively high temperatures in the bed (+900 C) water cooling coils are installed in the reactor. Ashes are intermittently discharged from the bottom of the reactor and after flue gases are cooled to 200 C lime is added to reduce their chlorine content. Finally the gases are filtered in a filter bag.
Three qualities of RDF are used in the combustion tests : heavy, light (with more paper/cardboard) and a mixture of heavy and light. The RDF is produced in the sorting plant of Zoetermeer, built by the contractor.
