COMBUSTION OF EMULSIONS CONTAINING USED LUBRICATING OILS

Obiettivo

Aim of the project is to control and if it is possible, to use exhausted emulsions in a large size power plant utilizing the energy of the fuel component that they contain (10:15%). The operation, the reliability and the life of the plant would not be altered and atmosphere would not be polluted by harmful substances.
The energy saved over the whole of 1984 worked out at 3.75 TOE, which is very low compared with the original estimate of 100 TOE. The difference is due primarily to the calorific value of emulsifiable oils.
Recovery of heat from the oil fraction was demonstrated simply and cheaply, although the type of compound present in the emulsion determines which process can be used.
A study was made of the content of metallic residues and their tendency to separate. The results obtained are of a general nature and show how the process depends on the type of emulsion.
More intensive systematic research is required. In fact, it is essential to check beforehand that an emulsion can be used without risk of atmospheric pollution or of corrosion.
Various technical problems arose, in particular with optimizing and line operation owing to the elimination of storage volume.
The project has been performed near the factory Magneti Marelli in (Crescenzago, Milano). The phases of the project are the following:
1) preliminary analysis of the potentially significant industries for the realization of the demonstration project and choice of the most representative.
2) on the spot investigation in the plant.
3) preliminary project.
4) equipment definition.
5) final project design.
6) purchasing and/or construction of equipment.
7) assembling of the plant.
8) start up and general test and inspection.
9) operation control.
10) monitoring campaign.
11) data evaluation.
Exhausted emulsions are collected, filtrated and homogenized. Then they are mixed with fuel oil. The mixture is then emulsifield and forwarded to the burner. The power plant object of the demonstrative project is formed by three steam generators of the following characteristics:
No.1) generator Pelucchi, which has a power capacity corresponding to 16.000 Kg per hour of superheated at 12 ateand 195 d.C. Fired by two burners Borroni;
No 2) identical to no 1;
No 3) generator Siccat which has a power capacity corresponding to 16.000 kg per hour of saturat steam at 12 ate, fired by a burner abs.
The emulsion initially contains from 3 to 8% of fuel oil. The emulsion is used on machine tools. The emulsion circuits, of which each machine tool has an indipendent one, are periodically emptied and filled with new emulsion while the exhausted one is no more used. The plant comprises a collection, filtration and homogeneization section for exhausted emulsion. This one has to be pressurized and sent to the mixing section and then emulsified with fuel oil. It is also foreseen a section for introducing water, which is also connected with the mixing section and is necessary for replacing the exhausted emulsion when it is temporarily lacking; the combustion characteristics are so not substantially altered.
The plant can utilize 1000 tonnes per year of exhausted emulsion. The corresponding energy saving in comparison with conventional process is estimated to be 100 tep for year.
