DEMONSTRATION MINIMUM ENERGY RENOVATION ON THE BASIS OF BALANCED VENTILATION AND AIR HEATING

Obiettivo

The objective of the project is to demonstrate to what extent a minimum level of energy consumption can be realized in renovation of flats, in conjunction with the enhancement of the residential comfort and elimination of constructional problems. Owing to the integral approach in the dwelling design, with the emphasis on energy saving, the increase in the total occupant's expenses can be expected to be limited. This improves the lettability of the dwellings.
It is interesting to compare the renovation as executed here with that of a more conventional renovation approach with less far reaching energy saving measures (limited insulation, no facades around balconies). In this case the energy consumption for heating amounts to approx. 1,320 m3/per annum.
It may be concluded that potentially larger savings are possible in the concept of air heating with the Combiduct-unit than with a more conventional installation. In order to achieve that, however, further developments are necessary to reduce the energy consumption of the pilot lights and the fans.
TECHNICAL FUNCTIONING AND INDOOR CLIMATE
Measurements pertaining to the technical functioning show that the Combiduct-installation operates well. Acceptable indoor temperatures are feasible even at outdoor temperature of +/- 10 deg. C. For this project the heating capacity of the Combiduct was sufficiently large. For other projects, however, the capacity of the installation might well be on thesmalll side, in particular in less well insulated houses, where the heating-up time might be too long.
In a number of apartments the noise-level was too high at first. After a few adjustments the noise in all apartments could be reduced to an acceptable level.
For air heating to function properly it is important that uncontrolled natural ventilation remains limited to a minimum. For this reason much attention has been given to draught proofing in this project. Although the results are considerably better than is generally achieved. It has nevertheless proved impossible to meet the requirement of the airtightness standard in this renovation.
The indoor climate has greatly improved after renovation. This is clear, for instance, from measurements of the differences in temperature between floor and celling which amounted to 15.2 deg. C on average before renovation and a mere 3.8 deg. C after renovation. NOx and CO2 measurements show that the ventilation is sufficient. Moreover, the relative humidity is not affected unfavourably by the measurements.
The resident survey shows that on the whole the residents are very satisifed with the apartments as well as the installation. The positive appreciation is expressed by the greater rentability.
A necessary improvement is the reduction of the gas consumption of the pilot lights and the electricity for the fans. This reduction is necessary for a full utilization of the energetic advantages which this concept is capable of when compared to conventional heating. The capacity of the installation is on the small side. To enable application on a wider scale, it is desirable that the capacity of the installation should be increased. In addition more research is recommended to further reduce the noise level.
The old situation of the apartments was characterized by:
- very poor thermal comfort;
- heating in the living room only (by means of a gas fire);
- inadequate ventilation (e.g. a geyser without a flue);
- humidity problems (condensation, mildew) where coldbridges occur;
- an average energy consumption of approx. 1,400 m3 natural gas/per annum (including hot water supply and cooking);
- problems related to the quality of living such as too small kitchens, small balconies, poorly;
- functioning showers;
- poor rentability and the risk of lack of occupancy.
Limited insualtion by means of double glazing and Central Heating is a widely practised method of improvement. However, for the residents this generally involves not only a rent increase, bbut also considerably higher heating costs. For this reason an approach has been ir. A. de Jong developed in which a good indoor climate throughout the whole flat is achieved while, at the same time, energy consumption and energy costs remain limited.
IMPROVED PLANS
Part of the improvement has been the introduction of a number of special facilities to improve living comfort and to keep energy costs down. The main "ingredients" to achieve this are:
- proper insulation of the outer surface;
- perfect draught proofing;
- installation of a combined system for heating and balanced ventilation, including
- construction of glass facades around the balconies (to prevent coldbridges, enlarge
- utilizing sun energy.
Coldbridges and related hunidity problems have been eliminated by placing facades around the balconies. This has resulted in a large residential balcony with sliding windows at the front.
Depending on weather conditions this may be used as a balcony or a sun room. This solution partly compensates for the lack of outdoor space which is inherent in flats.
For the heating installation the Combiduct air-heating is used which has developed by Strok-Air. The Combiduct has been developed specially for use in highrise blocksof flats where installation space is usually limited. The installation is placed over the sink and the gas stove in the kitchen. The Combiduct unit combines the following functions :
- heating the house;
- hot water supply;
- balanced ventilation;
- extraction of cooking smells;
- heat recovery from exhaust air and flue gases.
