Obiettivo
THE OVERALL AIM OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF COMPUTER CODES CAPABLE OF DESCRIBING THE THREE DIMENSIONAL TIME VARYING FLOW IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE CYLINDER OF ARBITRARY GEOMETRY. THE BENEFIT TO BE REALIZED ARE THE DESIGN OF MORE EFFICIENT COMBUSTION UNITS HENCE IMPROVED FUEL ECONOMY, REDUCED EXHAUST EMISSION AND INCREASED INDUSTRIAL COMPETITIVENESS OF EUROPEAN MANUFACTURES.
THIS WORK FORMS A NATURAL EXTENSION TO A STUDY PERFORMED UNDER CONTRACT EE-C1-210 UK (H) ENTITLED "THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THREE DIMENSIONAL MODELS OF COLD FLOW IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES "(1.3.83 - 31.12.84). THE CODE DEVELOPED UNDER THIS CONTRACT THE ("MICE" CODE) IS CAPABLE OF SIMULATING THE FLOW IN A LIMITED BUT USEFUL RANGE OF CHAMBER GEOMETRIES.
THIS NEW PROPOSAL WILL REFINE MICE AND EXTEND THE CAPABILITIES OF THIS FLUID DYNAMIC CODE AND TO COMMENCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GENERAL PURPOSE CODE FOR PREDICTING THE FLOW AND TURBULENCE IN THE EVIDENT RANGE OF COMBUSTION CHAMBER GEOMETRIES.
CODES WILL BE SUPPORTED WITH A SERIES OF PRE AND POST PROCESSING SOFTWARE DEVELOPED DURING THE PROGRAMME TO ENABLE THEM TO BE EASILY EXPLOITED WITHIN THE JRC COMPANIES.
CODE TESTING AND EVALUATION WILL BE CONDUCTED AGAINST A DATA BASE OF LDA MEASUREMENTS TAKEN IN A PLEXIGLASS ENGINE. THE MEASUREMENTS PROGRAMME WILL ALSO PROVIDE INPUT CONDITIONS AT VALVE EXIT FOR THE SIMULATIONS.
JRC ACTIVITY WILL CONSIST OF :
1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT
2. CODE TESTING
3. INVESTIGATION OF SUITABLE COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMMES FOR GRIDDING AND GRAPHICS
4. APPLICATION OF THE CODE BY MEMBER COMPANIES TO REALWORLD ENGINE DESIGN PROJECTS
5. INTEGRATION OF THE WORK INTO A LARGER COMBUSTION RESEARCH PROGRAMME, AIMED AT PROVIDING COMPUTER MODELLING OF OTHER ASPECTS OF THE COMBUSTION PROCESS.
