ELECTRODE EVALUATION AND PERFORMANCE IN SOLID OXIDE FUEL CELL REACTORS

Obiettivo

THE MAIN GOALS OF THE PRESENT PROJECT ARE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THERMOSTABLE ELECTRODE/ELECTROLYTE MATERIALS COMBINATIONS WITH LOW POLARIZATIONS AT HIGH CURRENT DENSITIES FOR AIR AND FUEL ELECTRODES, IN MULTI-CHANNEL SOLID OXIDE FUEL CELL (SOFC) REACTORS AT 700 AND 1000 CELSIUS DEGREES, AND MODELLING STUDIES OF THE INFLUENCE OF GAS-PHASE AND CELL/REACTOR PARAMETERS ON ELECTRODE KINETICS.

THE RESEARCH INCORPORATES FIVE MAIN THEMES RELEVANT TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF NOVEL OR IMPROVED ELECTRODE MATERIALS AND ELECTRODE MICROSTRUCTURES APT TO MULTI-CHANNEL SOFC REACTORS:

1. EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF GAS-PHASE TRANSPORT MODELS DESCRIBING THE OXYGEN AND FUEL DIFFUSION FLUXES UNDER DIFFERENT FLOWING CONDITIONS NEAR THE ELECTRODE SURFACE. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO PREDICT INFLUENCES OF TEMPERATURE, GAS-PHASE COMPOSITIONS, GAS FLOW-RATE, GEOMETRICAL PARAMETERS OF THE SYSTEM, AND OTHER VARIABLES THAT MIGHT INFLUENCE THE CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM CONDITIONS AT THE ELECTRODE SURFACE (UNIVERSITY OF AVEIRO).

2. A)SELECTION OF ELECTRODE MATERIALS IS DEPENDENT AND INFLUENCED BY THE ELECTROLYTE TO WHICH THEY ARE APPLIED. SUITABLE SOFC APPLICATION ELECTROLYTE MATERIALS ARE DOPED ZRO2, DOPED CEO2, OR DOPED BI2O3. THE TWO FIRST FOR SOFC REACTORS OPERATING AT 1000 CELSIUS DEGREES, THE LATTER FOR SOFC REACTORS OPERATING AT 700 CELSIUS DEGREES. EVALUATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT OF THOSE ELECTRODE/ELECTROLYTE MATERIALS COMBINATIONS THAT CAN DEVELOP HIGH CURRENT DENSITIES DUE TO A HIGH ELECTRODE REACTION RATE.

2. B) A VARIETY OF ELECTRODE MATERIALS WILL BE INVESTIGATED; THE MAIN ONES ARE: CERAMIC MIXED (ELECTRONIC AND IONIC) CONDUCTORS, DOPED PEROVSKITES (E.G. LAMNO3), SURFACE ACTIVATED ELECTROLYTES, COMPOSITE SYSTEMS, AND ALSO STAINLESS STEEL MATERIALS (ENSEEG, UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE AND TNO).

3. THE CURRENT-VOLTAGE PARAMETERS OF THE ELECTRODE/ELECTROLYTE MATERIALS COMBINATIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY POTENTIOSTATIC, GALVANOSTATIC AND CYCLIC VOLTAMMETRY TECHNIQUES. THIS INFORMATION IS OBTAINED FROM CATHODE AND ANODE BEHAVIOUR SEPARATELY, UNDER OPERATING CONDITIONS. THESE INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE COMPLETED BY IMPEDANCE SPECTROSCOPY (ENSEEG, UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE AND TNO).

4. IN THE PROCESS OF THE ELECTRODE REACTIONS OF GAS-PHASE COMPONENTS WITH THE SOLID (ELECTRODE(SURFACE, (ELECTRO) CATALYTIC BEHAVIOUR OF THE ELECTRODE PHASES IS A VERY IMPORTANT PARAMETER FOR INCREASING THE OVERALL ELECTRODE REACTION RATE. THE CATALYTIC ACTIVITY WILL BE DETERMINED IN A SPECIAL REACTOR WITH GAS CROMATOGRAPH AS DETECTOR. A COMPLEMENTARY TECHNIQUE IS THE USE OF 18O AS A TRACER ELEMENT TO DETERMINE THE OXYGEN EXCHANGE RATE ACROSS THE ELECTRODE SURFACE (ENSEEG AND UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE).

5. AS ALREADY MENTIONED BEFORE IN PROJECT 2, FOUR DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES ARE AVAILABLE WICH WILL BE INVESTIGATED ON THEIR ABILITY TO SUPPLY ELECTRODES IN THE MULTI-CHANNEL SOLID ELECTROLYTE FUEL CELL REACTORS. FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PREPARATION TECHNIQUES AND EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A MULTI-CHANNEL HONEYCOMB REACTOR OF ABOUT 5 CM TO THE POWER OF 3, COMMERCIALY AVAILABLE (ENSEEG AND UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE).
