DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPUTER PACKAGE FOR THE CALCULATION OF DIRECT COAL LIQUEFACTION PROCESS ECONOMICS.

Obiettivo

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO BUILD A COMPUTER MODELLING FRAMEWORK WHICH WILL ALLOW THE TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMICS OF PROCESSES FOR THE DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL TO BE SIMULATED WITH A VIEW TO THE EVENTUAL IDENTIFICATION OF FUTURE R&D NEEDS.
A software package is being developed to enable technical and economic studies of coal conversion processes to be carried out on personal computer equipment. A working title of ACCESS, an acronym for A Coal Conversion Economics Simulation System, has been adopted for the package. ACCESS is being developed with particular reference to direct liquefaction of coal, but it will be applicable to other coal conversion processes (eg gasification and power generation).

The development of ACCESS involves 3 principal activities. Firstly, simplification of the ARACHNE technical evaluation software, previously developed, to provide a flowsheeting program of the appropriate level of sophistication for the present application. Secondly, development of programs for the evaluation of process capital costs and integration of these programs with the flowsheeting program. Thirdly, development of programs to perform overall economic evaluations, including parametric studies, and integration of these programs with the flowsheeting and capital cost programs.
THIS IS ONE OF A SERIES OF BROADLY BASED STUDIES ON THE TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMICS OF LIQUID FUEL PRODUCTION FROM NON-PETROLEUM RESOURCES.THE IDEA IS TO ESTABLISH A RANKING AMONG ALL THE CANDIDATE PROCESSES AND IN THE CASE OF THE MORE PROMISING ONES TO IDENTIFY FRUITFUL AREAS FOR FUTURE RESEARSH.THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT WILL EXAMINE PROCESSES FOR THE DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL AND IN PARTICULAR THE BRITISH LSE TWO-STAGE PROCESS.AMONG THE OTHER PARALLEL STUDIES IS THE ULSTER UNIVERSITY STUDY ON THE DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL,THE ASTON UNIVERSITY PROJECT ON INDIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL AND THE ASTON STUDY OF LIQUEFACTION OF BIOMASS.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS 18 MONTHS R&D PROGRAMME WILL LEAD TO DEVELOPMENT OF A PORTABLE TECHNO-ECONOMIC EVALUATION TOOL WHICH CAN BE USED ON A PERSONAL COMPUTER TO INVESTIGATE DIRECT LIQUEFACTION PROCESSES.IT WILL INCORPORATE A FLOWSHEETING PROGRAMME BASED ON THE BRITISH COAL ARACHNE PACKAGE,ROUTINES FOR CAPITAL COST ESTIMATING BASED ON THE BRITISH COAL IDMON PACKAGE AND A NEW STRUCTURE AND ROUTINES FOR THE ESTIMATION OF PRODUCT COST.

THE PROPOSED EVALUATION TOOL WILL BE MODULAR IN DESIGN AND IN PRINCIPLE CAPABLE OF SIMULATING ANY DIRECT LIQUEFACTION PROCESS.ITS USE WILL BE DEMONSTRATED HOWEVER BY SIMULATION OF THE BRITISH COAL LSE PROCESS.

CLOSE COLLABORATION BY WAY OF REGULAR MEETINGS IS PLANNED WITH ULSTER UNIVERSITY AND ASTON UNIVERSITY WHO ARE MANAGING SIMILAR PROJECTS.

STATE OF ADVANCEMENT:
THE FIRST PROGRESS REPORT IS EXPECTED IN MARCH 1988.
