Combined action to study the oceans thermal skin.

Obiettivo

There is in general a difference in temperature between the skin of the ocean which is observed by satellites and the sea surface temperature (SST) which has been measured conventionally from ships. Our present inability to predict how this difference varies in space and time threatens to restrict the applicability of satellite-derived global sea surface temperature datasets to studies of climate change. A number of small scientific groups around the world, including several in Europe, have developed an interest in the ocean thermal skin. In isolation such groups can make only a limited impact on questions which need to be addressed on global scales. This proposal seeks to enhance the work of individual groups within the EU by promoting collaboration in the study of the thermal skin of the oceans through a programme of concerted action.
The programme aims: (a) to create a co-operative community of ocean skin temperature researchers and climate scientists using sea surface temperature, by co-ordinating European collaboration; (b) to increase European expertise in the measurement and climate applications of SST through meetings with selected international experts; and (c) to exchange practical experience and information on skin temperature measurements, techniques and problems, through workshops and exchange visits.
The methods to achieve these goals will include, firstly, the creation of a communication network between the partners, using the World Wide Web. This will allow the participants to exchange scientific papers, reports, data sets, models and algorithms quickly and efficiently. The coordinating institution will have responsibility for the provision and maintenance of this facility. Secondly, two workshops will be organized in order to exchange scientific ideas, methods, and techniques for determination of the skin effect and to stimulate new theoretical and empirical modelling of the skin temperature deviation.
Another role of the workshops will be to increase awareness amongst users of satellite SST concerning the importance of the skin effect, and particularly its importance to climate studies.
Thirdly, exchange visits will be arranged between two or more partners in order to ensure awareness of the activities of other groups, and to transfer expertise on experimental and theoretical procedures.
Finally, the partners will be active in encouraging participation in the network by all others who are, or who ought to be, concerned about the thermal skin of the ocean. Participants are expected to be drawn from satellite oceanographers and remote sensing specialists, air-sea interaction scientists working on the thermal skin and air-sea fluxes, modellers of atmosphere and ocean dynamics and climate scientists.
