Ziel
The overall goal is to initiate a scientific interpretation of the existing ground-based spectral UV measurements in Europe on the basis of an improved understanding of the radiative transfer processes. This will be realised by means of close interactions between the modelling and the measuring scientific communities by comparing the results of improved radiative transfer modelling calculations with quality-controlled UV measurements performed by stationary instruments at various sites in Europe.
The following objectives will be addresses in this project:
- to improve the existing radiative transfer models especially in cloudy and variable sky conditions.
- to develop the scientific tools to be able to offer valuable responses to specific user's questions such as validity of geographically interpolated UV measurements, trends of biologically weighted UV, daily UV-doses, seasonal variations, etc.
- to define the scientific tools and procedures for establishing an experimental 'database' for measured spectral UV-irradiance in Europe. - to define the type and the procedures for ancillary measurements and to continue the implementation of the quality-assurance and quality-control procedures.
The SUVDAMA project combines the best available scientific resources in Europe to describe the actual UV
radiation. The obtained results provide a basis for future scientific research as well as for policy makers. The
final products of this programme will be an accessible data base including ground based spectral solar UV
irradiance measurements as well as ancillary measurements. This will be a very attractive tool for all scientists
involved in UB-B effect studies. The improved understanding of the radiative transfer processes obtained by
means of the modelling studies planned during this programme will be of great use for the entire community,
by providing an excellent "picture" of the present UV climatology in Europe.
The workprogramme comprises the following tasks: 1. Modelling, 2. Data Submission, 3. Quality Assurance
and Quality Control, 4. Experimental Database, 5. Statistical Analysis, 6. Workshops, 7. Communication Newsletter.
Within the project, three phases are distinguished, each covering one year. Each of the phases emphasises a
specific target of the overall project: the definition phase (first year), the set-up phase (second year) and the
implementation phase (third year).
The participants are representatives from 12 European countries. This joint European effort will use existing
scientific and technological infrastructures to create a valuable scientific environment for advancing our
understanding of the UV climatology in Europe. These activities will be carried out in addition to and in close
cooperation with the WMO-GAW program. The proposed activities are an essential prerequisite for studying
UV-radiation effects on atmospheric chemistry and physics, human health, terrestrial and aqueous ecosystems
and materials.
