Literature survey on forest and ecosystem damage

Summary: The survey describes the state of the art on forest and ecosystems research in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK. Different from the rest of this report the restoration cost approach is used and not the method to estimate individuals` willingness to pay environmental damage costs of economic activities. However, given the methodological and practical problems involved in estimating reliable willingness to pay figures for the avoidance of damage to nature and biodiversity, the restoration cost approach, although second-best, is probably the only alternative to monetise damage, in this case.
