Concertation on European Validation Experiments for Coastal / Shelf Water Remote Sensing

Obiettivo

The calibration and validation of future satellite ocean colour sensor (e.g. SeaWiFS, OCTS, MERIS, MODIS) data and products is essential for their efficient use in monitoring and managing water quality and environmental impact assessment in the coastal zone of the states of the European Union. Since ocean colour satellite observations are influenced by unpredictable change in water and atmospheric characters, continuous in situ measurements of atmospheric parameters, water colour and bio-geo-chemical constituents at a variety of sites, statistically representing the different water and atmospheric seasonal/geographic variability around Europe, are the most appropriate means to support extended calibration/validation activities.
Within Europe there are a number of existing, operational national calibration/validation projects (e.g. CoASTS, PlyMBODY) which have been established independently to support the future exploitation of SeaWIFS and OCTS. These projects have many common features (sensors and measurements) and with exceptional novelty are producing continuous simultaneous marine and atmospheric measurements from buoys and oceanographic towers in different European coastal and shelf sea regions.
The aim of CEVEx is to co-ordinate these existing measurement projects to ensure comparability of collected data between sites through common protocols and co-ordinated inter-calibration activities of sensors and measurements for the efficient, timely and reliable calibration/validation of forthcoming ocean colour sensors. Thus CEVEx could serve as a pathfinder for a future wider pan-European calibration/validation network which would ensure credible operational interpretation and exploitation of the European MERIS scheduled for late 90' s.
In a two year period the project will act as a focus for the development of European calibration/validation research activities providing: i.guidelines on instrumentation specifications and measurement protocolsfor continuous atmospheric and marine optical measurements from buoys oroceanographic towers, conforming to internationally accepted standardsand practice;
ii. definition of optimum calibration and intercalibration techniques forfield instruments working in different sites, conforming to
internationally accepted standards and practice;
iii. assessment of processing techniques for the quality control,analysis and exploitation of atmospheric and marine measurementscollected on acontinuous basis;
iv. assessment of an appropriate data bank for the archiving of atmosphericand marine continuous measurements taken at different geographiclocations;
v.a simple pilot network for archiving measurements collected at the twosites, by adopting the protocols, the calibration/intercalibrationmethods, the processing techniques and the data banking defined andassessed in the framework of the current co-ordination project.
