Measurement of Ozone by airbus in-service Aircraft

Obiettivo

The MOZAIC II project corresponds to an extension of MOZAIC I programme for a two year new-phase with three main goals:
- Continuation of MOZAIC I project (5 aircraft, O3 and H2O measurements, constitution of data bank).
- Feasibility study of new airborne devices: NOy (chemiluminescence), CO (resonance fluorescence) and light compact computer (central unit). - Interpretation of MOZAIC data (MOZAIC I & II) to gain better understanding of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics.

1) In-flight measurements:
The continuation of MOZAIC flights is required to increase the number and the representativity of
measurements. The measurements and acquisition of ozone, water vapour and aircraft parameters will be
continued on the 5 aircrafts already in service. Data quality will be maintained by continuing calibrations and
a careful calculation & validation of final data. The MOZAIC data bank, including relevant meteorological and
satellite data, will be established for the whole period (July 1994 - December 1998).
2) New developments:
The study of automatic airborne devices (feasibility of concept, laboratory and in-flight tests) for measuring NOy
(representative of active nitrogen compounds driving the atmospheric chemistry: NO + NO2 + NO3 + N2O5
+ HNO2 + HNO3 + HO2NO2 + PAN + RNO2) and CO (both an ozone precursor and a tracer of pollution
originating from ground level) will be realised, in order to explore and to solve the complex problems raised
by the adaptation of existing technologies (chemiluminescence, resonance fluorescence) to the much more critical
requirements for an automatic and prolonged functionment abroad commercial aircraft.
3) Interpretation:
From the whole set of MOZAIC I & II data, quasi global climatologies of ozone, water vapour, relevant aircraft
parameters and elaborated parameters will be established in lower & mid-troposphere and at flight levels (8-
12 km). Emphasis will be given to the study of ozone photochemical production from anthropogenic and natural
sources, transformation phenomena and redistribution from its main sources (continent, boundary layer, tropics,
stratosphere). The nature of some of the various mechanisms of stratosphere/troposphere exchanges (transverse
secondary circulations, tropopause folding, cut-off lows) that may cause transport across the tropopause will be
also investigated through the synthesis of results from detailed case studies. In addition, the relation between
water vapour and ozone will be studied in order to investigate the fate of tropospheric ozone (transport versus
chemistry) and so tracing back the origin of tropospheric ozone. MOZAIC generates a wealth of O3 and H2O data, global coverage, and including many valuable vertical
profiles. These climatologies will be used to validate model simulations, particularly near the tropopause; a
region of the atmosphere which is still poorly understood, partly due to a lack of reliable data, and where strong
vertical gradients put severe constraints on numerical codes. The present budget of ozone will be investigated
in detail to identify any regional difference in the modelled ozone budget of the upper troposphere (influence
on regional trends) and to detect future possible changes. Also, case studies of interesting events (cut off lows,
deep convection, etc..) will be carried out to check if the models, run at high resolution, can reproduce the
observed behaviour. Validated models will be better able to predict the impact of emissions by subsonic aircraft
on ozone budget through improvement of the description of the interactions between dynamics, chemistry and
radiation. Tests will be carried both into specific flight corridors (mid-northern latitudes) and in the less
immediately affected regions (tropics, subtropics).
