The emerging paradigm of sustainable Tourism - A network perspective

Obiettivo

EMPOST-NET is a project proposed by the team of five actors - The International institute of Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden), The Universit,v of Tampere (Finland), The Cleaner Production Promotion Unit at University College Cork (Ireland), Randa Group Constancy (Spain), andThe University of Aegean (Greece).

The main objective of the proposed project is to study sustainability initiatives undertaken within the tourism industry, and through comparing these initiatives to existing policy tools to provide policy makers and the industry practitioners with suggestions for new models for enhancing sustainable development within tourism.

The networking approach to make the industry more sustainable is emerged from the very nature of the tourist industry (the product and consequently the environmental impact from the tourist operations are formulated by multiple actors, small size of the majority of enterprises, prevalence of indirect impact from tourism operations) and the Community policy of integration.
The focus of the study will be on environmental performance, including success and failure factors, of different types of networks within tourist industry. The methodology used in studying the emerging sustainable tourism networks is based on the grounded theory approach introduced by Glaser and Strauss (1967). The analysis of the study will lead to the recommendations for creating and maintaining 3 sustainable tourism networks and to improving a scientific understanding of networks management.

The objectives of the project are following:

- to identify, evaluate and compare practical steps towards sustainability taken cooperatively by multiple actors within the area of tourism (cf. Workprogramme Area 4.1 page 52)

- to evaluate existing policy actions and strategies with regard to current practical steps towards sustainability taken in the area of tourism (cf. Workprogramme 4.1.1 page 52)

- to develop the scientific bases for environmental management of tourism networks including development of environmental strategy, programme, etc. (cf. Workprogramme 4.1.1 page 53)

- to identify the main key policy, economic, and institutional and methodological barriers into integration of environmental sustainability considerations into tourism and to propose practical measures to reduce such barriers (cf. Workprogramme 4.1.1 page 53)

- to develop alternative views of sustainable development and instructions for transition towards sustainability within the area of tourism; to compare and assess their economic, and policy implications, and on this basis develop possible transition scenarios (cf. Workprogramme 4.1.3 page 54)
