Summary:
The statistical analyses sought to model the impacts of weather events (the predictors) on activity time series (the predictands). The models used were regression models, in which the predictor weather variables were principally rainfall, temperature and sunshine and the predictands were activity measures of weather-sensitive sectors.
Time series of the activity measures were extracted and graphed, and any long-term trend was either removed or incorporated in the regression equations as a predictor variable. The assumption is that the residuals from the long-term trend include short-term fluctuations in activity due to anomalous weather conditions. Where the climate variables are significant predictors of the residuals, a measure of the impact on the sector can be extracted and assigned a value.
Summary:
As part of the EU project WISE (Weather Impacts on Natural, Social and Economic systems), a written questionnaire has been developed and translated for use in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Italy to investigate public perception of weather extremes and behavioural adaptations.

As part of the statistical analyses which took place in WISE, there was analysis of activity measures which were selected to be: (a) weather sensitive, (b) common to the four countries involved in WISE.
Because of this selection procedure, weather-related impacts on these activity measures could be compared between countries. Common activity measures were identified in the following sectors: outdoor fires, agriculture, the all-cause monthly death rate, energy consumption and tourism.
As part of the project, the WISE participants carefully documented: (a) Activity measures which had been identified but rejected for use in the project either because they were not easily available in all four countries or because of differences in the methods of data collection recording. These measures were originally for a much wider selection of activities than the final five named above, including for example statistics on water supply for some countries. (b) Activity measures which had been identified and accepted for analysis.
