On line measurement for preventing fouling when closing industrial process water circuit

Obiettivo

SUMMARY
The majority of industrial processes use aqueous fluids. The current trend is to reuse the water to a maximum in order to econornise on its consumption, and to produce the most concentrated wastewater possible in order to facilitate its subsequent elimination.

Employing this type of practice comes up against sometimes redhibitory problems of circuit fouling due to the effects of deposits, formation of biofilm, and scale formations.

The production of electrical energy alone accounts for 75% of the consumption of industrial cooling water. Increasing the concentration factor from 1 to 5 would allow a reduction of around 95% of the flows sampled.
However, this increase leads to scaling and biofouling phenomena.
The main objective of the project is to develop the scientific knowledge necessary to define and validate on-line instrumentation and measuring techniques regarding the fouling properties of aqueous process fluids when these are reused in a closed loop or have a very high level of recycling.
OBJECTIVES
The current trend regarding the use of aqueous process fluids is to promote their reuse in a closed loop (partially or totally) to the maximum, with a view to limiting both water consumption and pollution discharge.
Employing this type of practice comes up against sometimes redhibitory problems of circuit fouling due to the effects of deposits, biofilm and scale formations.

The main objective of the project is to develop the scientific knowledge necessary to define and validate on-line instrumentation and measuring techniques regarding the fouling properties of aqueous process fluids when these are reused in a close loop or have a very high level of recycling.
The wealth of recent publications on biofouling alone (we have documented around one thousand) demonstrates the interest in this crucial problem. The project aims to go beyond the empirical references currently used by the operators of industrial water circuits in order to define scientifically established and/or calibrated methods that can be employed in industrial operating conditions.

The availability of these methodological and instrumentation means must allow:

- the rational determination of the reuse or recycling rates of industrial process water in relation to their characteristics and the requirements governing their use,

- the continuous or fast sequential monitoring of the instantaneous characteristics of circuit process water in order to place them in relation to set limits and to orient process control with a view toward process control (automatic control of purges, modification of re utilisation rates, etc.).
