Wood Exploitation by using Starch impregnation and DIC Technology

Obiettivo

This project is based on the results of an Exploratory Phase and aims to the de velopment of a recently patented process for the sector of archaeological wood and the fresh wood, consisting in the consolidation of waterlogged woods and in reinforcing the fresh one by using a treatment that comply a starch impregnati on coupled with the innovative D.I.C. desiccation system (Controlled Instantane ous Depression). In the project it is meant to proceed testing various ki nd of starch (natural product with low cost, easily reversible) to put inside t he wood. This process is coupled with the gelatinisation of the starch by DIC a pparatus, so the starch will fill all the gaps existing inside the wood. The ma in phases of the research are the study of impregnation techniques in laborator y, the study of the drying/polymerisation techniques by D.I.C. the verificatio n of the durability and reversibility of the process and the study of the wood conservation techniques, the building of a pilot plant for washing/impregnation , the building of a pilot plant for drying/consolidation, the production of con solidated products, the evaluation of the results obtained, the study of the pr eliminary market, the evaluation and setting up of operation for the exploitati on and diffusion of the technologies. In this program main importance is give n to the optimisation of the impregnation techniques on waterlogged wood, the optimisation of the drying/polymerisation techniques on fresh wood, the optimis ation of the drying/polymerisation techniques on waterlogged wood, the producti on of representative elements of treated fresh wood and of consolidated waterlo gged wood. DIC apparatus is an innovative technique very efficacious that pe rmits to reach very good quality results . The main innovation included in the process is the exploitation of the gelatinisation process of starch; this opera tion permits to bind chemically a large part of the water initially present in the waterlogged wood and obtain a gelatinisation product stable to hygrometric changes, resistant to bacteria attacks and without shrinkage during hardening, through the combined action of the DIC desiccation process and some additives. In fact, the developed process permit to obtain products stable to the atmosp heric and bacterial aggressions as regards the fresh wood. Regarding the waterl ogged wood, the impregnation process is completely reversible and permit to obt ain products resistant to the bacterial aggressions too. Moreover, compared wit h the best techniques now on the market, those developed within this project sh ow the following improvements, keeping almost analogous physical chemical chara cteristics: lower costs, total reversibility, a more natural look of the trea ted wood, possibility to treat very big elements. rapid treatment (ten times qu icker than PEG + liophilisation). What's more, regarding the fresh wood. this project aims also to improve the characteristics of second quality fresh w ood in order to increase its employment and its stability and to develop a tech nology quite economic and ecological to improve the characteristics of the wood , so it could become big compatible to the market of furniture and interior des ign because of its good quality and its low costs. concerning the waterlogged wood, the goals are also to develop a new process useful for very big archaeol ogical woods (whole oats) actually not treatable with the best processes actual ly on the market (PEG + liophilisation), and to create a totally ecological pro cess for the restoration of wood: the technique in fact doesn't include any che mical or toxic element. or reaching these results, in the project we intend t o realise two pilot plants, one concerning the DIC apparatus especially adapted to treat wood, the other one concerning impregnation of wood with starch to te st the whole process on waterlogged or fresh wood products having a representat ive dimension. The industrial objectives of this project complies with the general scope and objectives of the ENVIRONMENT program (areas 2.2.3 and 2.2.4) since they contribute to the development of environmental friendly technologie s and products by means of exploitation of natural resources as wood and starch ; moreover this research aims at the protection and preservation of the Europea n cultural heritage, and particularly, in our case, of archaeological wood. Thi s proposal is very sensitive to the environmental problems caused by paintings and chemical impregnating products, in fact it introduces on the market a new c lean process useful to imbue wood with a totally ecological system that substit ute the chemicals for impregnating and permit to reduce strongly the need of pa ints for finishing. The more direct industrial applications of the result s will be the following: restoration/reinforcement process of wood archaeologic al founds and application of the new technique to three new wood materials (ven eer cut, sheared, sawed wood) with improved physical mechanical characteristics , completed with the relative producing technologies. The benefits of the research for the involved SMEs are clear: partner 4 and partner 8 could improv e their market, in their own sectors of waterlogged and fresh wood, offering hi gh quality and low price products; partners 4, 5 and 6 will develop their own p lanting know how, acquiring a great experience and finding brand new markets; p artner 7 could find new sectors for the valorisation of new materials prepared. From this project would directly take advantage: the extracting and processi ng starch industries, that could enter in a new market; low quality wood produc ers, that could better valorise their products; the wood sector in general, tha t will have the availability more innovative and cheaper materials.
