THE GREENLAND ICECORE PROJECT (GRIP) : CHANGE OF TRACE GAS CONCENTRATIONS (CO, CH4, N2O, AND POSSIBILY COS AND 13CO2/12CO2 RATIO) IN RELATION TO CO2 AND CLIMATIC VARIATIONS INFERRED FROM ICECORE ANALYSIS

Obiettivo

The main purpose of this project is to drill through the ice sheet at Summit in Central Greenland in order to recover the entire core, to coordinate the ice core analyses and to enable the common interpretation of the results. The results from the analysis of the expected 3100 m of ice core will be the first complete set of climatic and environmental parameters, spanning at least 200.000 years, corresponding to two glacial cycles. Furthermore, new analytical techniques will be developed.

The aims here are twofold:
a) Actual drilling through the ice sheet and handling of the ice core
With continuous in situ ice core processing comprising core logging, measurement of electrical conductivity, of dust concentration, and at specified depth intervals, of the H2O, NH4+ and NO3 concentration.
b) Analytical techniques and targets
Chemical and physical parameters will be measured in the field and in the laboratories of the participating institutions according to well tested methods already used in other glaciological investigations. However, it is expected that new methods will be developed. Two laboratories will develop a FM-TDLAS instrument for the determination of CO2, CH4, N2O and CO in the air bubbles trapped in the ice, using smaller ice samples.
