Development of a standard method (protocol) for the measurement of organic contaminants "tars" in biomass producer gases

Objectif

Measurement methods and definitions for organic contaminants in biomass gasification based CHP (combined heat and power) systems are numerous and non-uniform. As result, comparison of data and definition of clear maximum ollawable concentrations for these contaminants is problematic. This forms an obstacle for market introduction of the CHP systems as the contaminants can cause damage or an unaccemptable level of maintenance. The objective of the project is to remove this obstacle by developing a standard measurement method (Protocol) which is accepted and used by parties working on biomass gasification and has entered the standardisation procedure at CEN. This work continues an initiative started by IEA, EU and US-DoE to develop such a Protocol and will be based on the two draft Protocols which resulted from this initiative . The new Protocol will be optimised and tested thought R&D activities co-ordinated from the project. As acceptance and use by others is considered to be very important, dissemination and internalisation forms an essential part of this project. It will be accomplished by the use of internet, Conference contributions, involvement of Relievers and a Workshop.
The actual outcome consists of:- Two first versions of the Guideline issued for internal discussion and reviewing by a group of experts in 2000 and 2001 respectively. - The draft final and final version of the Guideline issued in 2002, before and after the Workshop held at the 12th European Biomass Conference in Amsterdam. - An inventory of R&D requirements for optimisation & evaluation of the Guideline prepared at the start of the project. With this document, new R&D activities were started in the course of 2000 to optimise the Guideline. The results of this R&D, including recommendations for further R&D, have been reported and a summary has been included in the final project report. - An Internet site: www.tarweb.net. The site contains the Guideline, the R&D report and the papers presented at three European Biomass Conferences. - Papers and Presentations (oral and poster) presented at three European Biomass conferences in Sevilla (2000), Seefeld/Tirol (2000) and Amsterdam (2002). - A workshop on the Guideline organised during the 12th European Biomass Conference, held in Amsterdam in June 2002. - For the Standardisation of the Guideline, a proposal for the installation of a CEN Task Force was submitted and accepted by the Technical Board of CEN (Task Force 143 "Measurement of organic contaminants (tars) in biomass producer gases"). To facilitate the work of this Task Force, a proposal for an Accompanying Measure in the Fifth Framework Programme of the EU was submitted and accepted (EU-contract ENK5-CT-2002-80648: "Standardisation of a guideline for the measurement of tars in biomass producer gases"). - The final report issued as a public ECN-report (ECN-report ECN-C-02-090: "Guideline for sampling and analysis of tar and particles in biomass producer gases").

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
