EVALUATION OF AN OXYGENIC BIOLOGICAL FLUIDISED BED (BFB) FOR THE TREATMENT OF WASTE WATER

TO EVALUATE FLUIDISED BED TECHNIQUES FOR WASTE TREATMENT.

THE BIOLOGICAL FLUIDISED BED (BFB), A RECENT DEVELOPMENT FOR TREATING WASTE WASTERS, IS ESSENTIALLY A SUSPENSION OF SMALL SAND PARTICLES COATED WITH MICRO-ORGANISMS. THE WASTE WATER FLOWING UPWARDS THROUGH THE BED IS PURIFIED BY THE MICRO-ORGANISMS WHICH MAY BE EITHER AEROBIC OR ANAEROBIC. MOST TYPES OF WASTE WATERS MAY BE TREATED, BUT THE BED IS PARTICULARLY APPLICABLE TO THE AEROBIC TREATMENT OF DILUTE SOLUTIONS SUCH AS MUNICIPAL SEWAGE AND CHEMICAL PROCESSING EFFLUENTS.

THE ECONOMIC BENEFIT OF THE BIOLOGICAL FLUIDISED BED STEMS FROM THE HIGH CONCENTRATION OF MICRO-ORGANISMS, UP TO 10 TIMES HIGHER THAN NORMALLY FOUND IN CONVENTIONAL REACTORS. THE VOLUME AND HENCE THE CAPITAL COST OF BFBS ARE THEREFORE RELATIVELY SMALL.

WATER RESEARCH CENTRE HAS INSTALLED A LARGE BFB AT ITS COLESHILL EXPERIMENTAL PLANT DESIGNED TO TREAT AEROBICALLY DIURNAL-VARYING FLOWS OF MUNICIPAL SEWAGE FROM POPULATIONS UP TO 4.000. A SMALL COMPUTER CONTROLS THE PLANT AND MONITORS PERFORMANCE.

THE EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME DUE TO START ON 1 OCTOBER 1981 WILL EXAMINE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BED OVER A WIDE RANGE OF LOADINGS TO EVALUATE THE PROCESS ON A REALISTIC SCALE AND TO PROVIDE DATA NECESSARY FOR THE DESIGN AND THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF LARGE SCALE PLANTS. BOTH SEWAGE AND PARTIALLY-TREATED SEWAGE WILL BE TREATED TO PROVIDE DATA FOR DESIGNING NEW SEWAGE WORKS OR EXTENSIONS TO EXISTING OVER-LOADED SEWAGE WORKS.
