MEASUREMENT OF THE AMOUNT PARTICLE SIZE OF THE ELEMENTS PB, CD, HG, AS, CR, V AND TI EMITTED BY A TYPICAL MUNICIPAL INCINERATOR.

Ziel

TO ASSESS THE CONTRIBUTION OF REFUSE INCINERATION TO AMBIENT AIR CONCENTRATIONS AND FALL-OUT OF HEAVY METALS.

THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS ARE CONSIDERED:

- EMISSIONS OF THE PB, CD, HG, CR, AS, V AND T1 AT THE INCINERATOR PLANT OF THE CITY OF GENT. AERODYNAMIC PARTICLE SIZES ARE DETERMINED USING A CASCADE IMPACTOR;

- AMBIENT AIR CONCENTRATIONS AND PARTICLE SIZE IN THE VICINITY OF THE PLANT; GASEOUS HG COMPOUNDS ARE SAMPLED ON GOLD-COATED SEA SAND:

- DRY AND WET DEPOSITION AROUND THE STACK;

- RELIABILITY OF DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES: NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS (AS, CR, V), WAVELENGTH DISPERSIVE X-RAY FLUORESCENCE (PB, CR, CD), INDUCTIVELY COUPLED PLASMA EMISSION SPECTROMETRY (CD, PB, CR, TI) AND GASCHROMATOGRAPHY COUPLED TO COLD VAPOUR ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY (HG AND ORGANIC COMPOUNDS).

FOR T1 A SPECIAL CHEMICAL SEPARATION PROCEDURE MUST BE DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE LOW CONCENTRATIONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES.
