TO DEVELOP A FEASIBLE OVERALL PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF METALS CONTAINING WASTES.
THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS IMPLEMENTED IN TWO PHASES:
PHASE 1: FEASIBILITY STUDY
THIS PHASE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
- INVENTORY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT METALS-CONTAINING WASTES;
- SELECTION OF THE WASTES WHICH ORIGINATE ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS AND FOR WHICH THE TREATMENT IS ECONOMIC. MAIN EMPHASIS IS GIVEN FIRSTLY TO THE WASTES COMING FROM METAL FINISHING AND COATING INDUSTRIES, THEN APPLICATION IS SEARCHED FOR OTHER TYPES OF INDUSTRY;
- STUDY ON THE STATE-OF-THE-ART WITH RESPECT TO PRETREATMENT AND LEACHING TECHNIQUES;
- EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON PARTS OF THE PROCESS IN ORDER TO SOLVE THE REMAINING UNCERTAINTIES AND TO QUANTIFY THE MOST IMPORTANT PARAMETERS FOR SCALE UP;
- SELECTIVITY OF THE SEPARATION OF LEAD AS A CHROMATE COMPOUND AND OF MANGANESE AS THE INSOLUBLE MANGANESE DIOXIDE;
- SELECTIVE EXTRACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF IRON, CHROMATE, COPPER AND NICKEL;
- DETERMINATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF PH ON THE SEPARATION CHARACTERISTICS.
PHASE 2: EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH (UP TO 50 KG/DAY)
THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ARE CARRIED OUT:
- ADAPTATION OF THE EXPERIMENTAL INSTALLATION FOR TREATMENT OF THE SPECIFIC WASTE;
- EXPERIMENTS ON ARTIFICIALLY PREPARED WASTES;
- PREPARATION OF END PRODUCTS IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES TO DETERMINE SPECIFICATIONS OF THESE PRODUCTS IN RELATION TO THE POTENTIAL MARKET FOR THEM;
- EVALUATION ON SETTING UP A PRELIMINARY PROCESS SCHEME, A MATERIAL BALANCE OF THE PROCESS AND ENERGY BALANCE OF THE PROCESS.
