Obiettivo
VARIOUS SURFACE ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR THE CHEMICAL STUDY OF THE FIBER SURFACE WILL BE USED. THE LAMMA METHODOLOGY WHICH WAS EMPLOYED EARLIER WILL BE USED AS A QUICK AND STRAIGHTFORWARD TECHNIQUE FOR ROUTINE CHARACTERISATION. ITS UTILITY WILL BE INCREASED THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF A NEW TRANSIENT RECORDER WHICH WILL ALLOW THE SENSITIVE DETECTION AT CONSIDERABLY HIGHER SAMPLING RATES THUS ELIMINATING ONE OF THE PREVIOUS DRAWBACKS OF THE INSTRUMENTATION. ITS USE WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED WITH SEVERAL OTHER SURFACE SENSITIVE ANALYTICAL METHODS ESPECIALLY SECONDARY ION MASS SPECTROMETRY USING THE CAMECA 4F ION MICROSCOPE. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THE MEASUREMENT OF ORGANIC PROBES AND THEIR REACTION PRODUCTS AT THE SURFACE WILL BE PERFORMED BY THE USE OF LASER IRRADIATION OF THE SAMPLE SURFACE SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE ION BOMBARDMENT. ELECTRON MICROSCOPY WITH EITHER THE ELECTRON MICROPROBE OR WITH A SCANNING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE IS EQUALLY POSSIBLE AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHER ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS. THE APPLICATION IN THIS WORK OF A WIDE PLETHORA OF MICROANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE PURE AND MODIFIED PARTICLE SURFACE.
SAMPLES WILL BE STUDIED THAT WERE PREPARED IN CANADA BY THE "PROGRAMME DE RECHERCHES SUR L'AMIANTE" (PRAUS), THE SOCIETE NATIONALE DE L'AMIANTE (CERAM-SNA) AND THE ASBESTOS INSTITUTE, ALL AT SHERBROOKE. THESE SAMPLES WILL ALLOW THE STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT INDUSTRIAL PROCESS PARAMETERS ON THE MODIFICATION OF THE CHRYSOTILE SURFACE. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WILL BE COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED IN EXPERIMENTAL BIOASSAYS AND CYTOTOXICITY INVESTIGATIONS WHICH WILL BE PERFORMED IN THE BOLOGNA INSTITUTE OF ONCOLOGY (PROFESSOR C. MALTONI) IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE ONCOLOGICAL RISK AND THE CARCINOGENIC POTENCY OF THE NEWLY DEVELOPED ASBESTOS SUBSTITUTION PRODUCTS.
