Ziel
To quantify the chlorine loading potentials of inorganic chlorinated compounds.
This project will focus on the measurement of the heterogeneous reaction rates of nitryl chloride (ClNO2), nitrosyl chloride (NOCl) and phosgene (COCl2) on aqueous aerosols. The rate of uptake due to heterogeneous reactions is related to fundamental properties of the substances such as, the mass accommodation coefficient (characterising the efficiency of gas/liquid exchanges), the Henry's law constant (H) and the hydrolysis rate constant (k) which will be determined experimentally.
The project will stress the influence of heterogeneous reactions, which are too often ignored, and will show how they can greatly affect the gas phase concentrations of important trace gases such as ClNO, ClNO2 and COCl2.
A number of new data about the kinetics of mass transfer of trace gases at the air/water interface will be produced. These data will be very useful for subsequent tropospheric chemistry models.
The rate of uptake for these three compounds will be determined by three different but complementary techniques : the "wetted wall column", the "droplet train technique", and the "bubble technique".
