To investigate the impact of peoples' cultural backgrounds on their perceptions of historical and present experience with regard to the environment, and the effect of these perceptions on policy decisions concerning the conservation of the common natural/environmental and cultural heritage in Europe.
To investigate the impact of peoples' cultural backgrounds on their perceptions of historical and present experience with regard to the environment, and the effect of these perceptions on policy decisions concerning the conservation of the common natural/environmental and cultural heritage in Europe.
The project includes :
1. Collection and analysis of official policy documents;
2. Interviews with local agencies concerned with environmental issues and policies;
3. Interviews with EU policy making agencies, particularly with their technical and scientific departments.
The investigation of local communities' social, cultural and environmental contexts is based on collection of demographic, economic, social and political data. The investigators carry out in-depth interviews to map different scales of perception of the environment in spatial, temporal and qualitative terms.
The comparative analysis focuses upon the differences and similarities that emerge from documents and interviews with regard to:
1. The perception and the assessment of the cultural heritage;
2. Environmental concerns;
3. The role of agriculture and tourism in the exploitation of the natural environment;
4. The location and politics of an area and the assessment include within it.
The modelling includes a multi-agent system that combines a representation of both the behaviour of the ecosystem and the cultural system within which the policies are decided. An ergodic model looks more closely at the relationship between observation, perception and cognition. The models are intended to build on the empirical analysis and test the theoretical assumptions developed within the project.
