Ziel
The primary objective of the research is to investigate the fundamental properties of novel catalysts for the selective reduction of nitrogen oxides by hydrocarbons in the presence of a large excess of oxygen. A second objective is to develop very active, low temperature catalysts for the removal of small concentrations of volatile organic compounds.
The expected achievements are :
* the design, synthesis, and testing of novel types of catalyst in which "molecular queuing" can be used to control the reaction selectivity;
* the development of a fundamental understanding of the mechanism of selective reduction of nitrogen oxides by natural gas and by higher hydrocarbons;
* the evolution of a strategy for the design of catalysts which are more stable, more active and more selective;
* the development of a process concept for the selective reduction of nitrogen oxides by hydrocarbons in the presence of excess oxygen.
The project involves two tasks :
Task 1 : selective reduction of NOx in the presence of excess oxygen using Natural Gas (essentially methane);
Task 2 : selective reduction of NOx in the presence of excess oxygen using higher hydrocarbons (exemplified by hexane).
The research will address two aspects of selective NOx reduction, involving either methane or higher hydrocarbons as the reducing agent. This separation into two sub-topics is necessary since the very different reactivities of methane as compared to other hydrocarbons makes it almost certain that the optimum catalysts will be different in each case.
