PEST RISK ANALYSIS OF PINEWOOD NEMATODE-RELATED BURSAPHELENCHUS SPECIES IN VIEW OF SOUTH EUROPEAN PINE WILTING AND WOOD IMPORTS FROM ASIA

Ziel

The pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is native to North America and has been introduced to East Asia where its spreading caused huge damage and enormous wood losses in Japanese and in Chinese coniferous forests. It can spread from wood, especially when the latter is infested with vector insects. B. xylophilus is a quarantine pest of the EU according to the Directive 77/93/EEC. The occurrence and of pathogenic and apathogenic races and the great morphological and biological similarity with B. mucronatus, which is spread in Eurasia and is primilary of apathogenic nature, make it difficult to characterize populations. Pine wilting of unclear causes has been recently observed in several European countries (Austria, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus), with the role of Bursaphelenchus species involved being unclear. This may involve species closely related with B. xylophilus or B. mucronatus. Interspecific crossability of these species has been proved by experiments and the occurrence of populations modified by transfer of genes is hence possible.

The objective is : to develop a Pest Risk Assessment for the EU regarding pinewood
Bursaphelenchus species as required for the management of Directive 77/93/EEC in relation to the timber trade with North America.

Short description of the project :

In order to develop a Pest Risk Assessment for the EU regarding pinewood Bursaphelenchus species, the project will :

- assess the occurrence and distribution of Bursaphelenchus nematodes in
Europe and in imports.
- identify the different species morphologically and by developing molecular
biological methods.
- develop methods for detection of pathogenicity using molecular biological
techniques and testing of Bursaphelenchus pathogenicity
- integration of taxonomic, distribution, host and pathogenicity information with
temperature data
- develop recommendations for quarantine aspects in timber trade in relation to
Directive 77/93/EEC.
