Genetic diversity in river populations of european black poplar for evaluation of biodiversity, conservation strategies, nature development and genetic improvement

Ziel

The european black poplar (populus nigra) is a unique pioneer species belonging to the riparian ecosystems. It has social and economic importance and is an ideal species for the study of conservation biology.

This project aims to develope stategies for the conservation of european black poplar and its restoration to riparian ecosystems based on the measurement of the genetic diversity in wild populations at different levels. The current state of conservation in ex situ genebank will be described. Guidelines for in situ management and re-introduction strategies will be formulated. Populations with a broad genetic diversity will be maintained to ensure adaptation to new environmental conditions and breeding programmes are provided with new genotypes.

In this project specialists from the european forest genetic resources programme (euforgen) are working together with molecular geneticists so traditional methods can be combined with modern techniques and the results of this project will be comparable with former studies.

The high level of standardization of methods and techniques in this project will ensure a synthesis of the genetic diversity of p. Nigra in europe.

The european black poplar was recognized as an endangered species by the countries who signed the strasbourg resolution no. 2 on the protection of forests in europa. This resolution was also adopted by the european union.
